Correct move by Ukrainians. Get people talking!
It's a (very costly) sacrifice worth making.
A few Dota players don't represent the war crimes their president made. However, I want to believe Russians didn't participate because of the war, and how even being a part of Russia makes them look bad right now.
Imagine if your leader started a war and all you wanted to do was play video games and live in peace. Individuals don't represent their country's views, but a group of people from the same country may.
Those players should join another team if at all possible.
Reinstatement was not about whether they can play or not, it was whether they can participate under the Russian flag.
If you want to "live in peace", don't sport the active aggressor's / terrorist flag.
To me, this is why the US is where it is today, and other countries heading the same way.
"This is the way it is, it's out of my control, and I just want to live my life."
This is how apathy destroys a nation. Life needs to be uncomfortable for everyone that feels this way so that they participate in voting when they would normally abstain. And in those few wondrous cases, convince them to change their perspective and recognize oppression, be it political or capitalistic. Or for countries that have moved so far as Russia, perhaps revolt.
Propaganda comes in many forms
When bully is allowed into the room you smash its teeth, not run away.
In this very tournament there are no Russians at all, but it is important to make a mark. I remember Virtus Pro, where in 2022 a Russian player drew a big Z on the minimap. The team was excluded, but was back in 2023 as if nothing had happened.
While they are at it they should ban everyone from israel, saudi arabia, cina, egypt and so on
It's a shame that most of the groups/people involved voted in favor of admitting Russian players back in, at least under the Russian flag.
I think the decision made by FIDE (International Chess Federation) for their sport is a fine compromise that this E-Sports federation should have adopted as well. In protest of the Ukraine invasion, FIDE banned any players from playing under the Russian or Belarusian flag, but allowed them to play anyways under a neutral, FIDE flag. And for players from Russia that were outspoken against Ukraine or in favor of Russia's invasion (i.e. Sergey Karjakin), they were penalized and barred from play on an individual case-by-case basis.
It shows that this invasion won't be tolerated, but at the same time, you as a player will only be punished if you choose to support it on your own volition, rather than by association.
