I saw a post in here that had a bug and wouldn't let me respond from my phone, but...

It was talking about paywalls for news sites. And this is literally the best one i know to get passed them. Just copy and paste.

While this is great for the one-off article in publications you rarely read, also keep in mind that journalism is expensive and the reason a lot of it is getting so bad these days is that nobody pays for it. So if you have money to spare, please consider having at least one proper subscription in a quality newspaper somewhere to support the integrity of journalism. :)

The Guardian is a good publication to consider as they don't have a paywall to begin with. That's a bold choice, and one I believe they should be rewarded for.

Also keep in mind that paying for news often leaves the poorer community without information. While yes, i agree that journalists should be compensated, news organisations have become profit seeking businesses since the 70s, and not, as they should be, places of information gathering for everyone.

A paywall prices poor people out of information. And things like this still help them.

The guardian should be lauded for their model yes, but that is one company. They can't write about everything.

I've noticed that a lot of right-leaning "journalism" is free and left leaning journalism has a pay wall.

I wonder if that has anything to do with the growth of the right.

It's actually frightening how much is spent on right wing propaganda. I know there are whole businesses dedicated to posting on social media pretending to be genuine users. The last election in Illinois they mailed out fake newspapers with all kinds of nonsense in them. They even have country music tours that go to small towns with political messaging.

It's scary how much money and power is intoxicating.

The us right is the local bourgeoisie and it’s propaganda is intended for everyone so everyone doesn’t climb over the fences and eat them alive. The us “left” is the national bourgeoisie and their propaganda is directed at their members and collaborators so as to maintain unity.

At this point, we need to pull a page out of Iceland's book. They arrested their bankers over bailing them out. We need to do the same, only include politicians on the menu too.

I don't ingest a lot of right wing media, but it mighg make sense because people who ingest right wing media are usually living in an echo chamber and are gullible. 🤷🏾‍♂️🤷🏾‍♂️🤷🏾‍♂️

I wonder if that has anything to do with the growth of the right.

No doubt plays a role, but I'd say it has more to do with the media's obsession with getting paid. They are a business first and foremost, journalistic integrity be damned. They pushed stories they knew would get clicks without any regard to the facts or properly framing the issue.

Yeah pay walls don't help but they didn't cause the issues we're seeing. Those that follow the actual fake news that conservatives push weren't reading articles anyway, the paywall wasn't what kept them from reading and researching properly.

So I have noticed that 12ft.io is having problem with newer articles. Anything posted in the last 3 or 4 days seems to not have been scraped by whatever they are using or however they are using it. I've also seen some people say that they've taken money from corporations to not scrape articles. Now I don't know if that is true, but I will do some research and get back to this shortly.

[–] StarLuigi@lemmy.blahaj.zone 8 points 1 year ago

Pretty sure they do take money, I've had some websites not work and it showed some sort of message. I forgot exactly what it said but it wasn't an error.

Lol all walls...except the NYT

[–] huntr@lemmy.sdf.org 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Any idea about getting around this? It just gives an incomplete article.

Use the extension mentioned in the above comments

Used to use them, but they often don't work, now I just use archive.today (they also offer an extension to quickly open the link there).

[–] IAmMohit@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 year ago

If it can be unpaywalled, it can usually be found on https://archive.ph. If it’s not already there, you can always try saving the article you’re trying to see there.
