I'm new to Lemmy and have been searching the federated communities for those which I wanted to subscribe to. For some reason, this community's name renders weird on my instance's search as well as the app I'm using (see image).

Is "Fantasy books, stories, &c" correct? And if so, what does "&c" stand for?

And cetera

It's a weird way of saying etc, which is an abbreviation of et cetera. Which is Latin for "and the rest", with et being "and". It's more colloquially translated as "and so forth", or "and so on", or "yada yada yada"

This has me smiling ear to ear. Could be that I'm just overtired. 🤪

Night night interwebs &c.

Etc is too long nowadays? Good god.

More archaic than weird, I'd say. The reason & means 'and' is that it's a stylized ligature of et.

Well, archaic does kind of fill the bill being a fantasy community and all. 😁

Couldn't it just be called "fantasy"?

As this community has first moved advantage, it'll likely be the default fantasy hub so it might as well be kept simple.

I'm just a newbie here, but if I had a vote I'd certainly vote for the single word.

I'm glad you asked this op, I didn't get &c either and it's been bugging me for days.

I'm glad my ignorance could help another poor soul. 🤪

As per the sidebar, &c is the old way of saying et cetera

[–] Someology@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I think that's some sort of old abbreviation for "etc./etcetera" ?

[–] GlassHalfHopeful 1 points 1 year ago

Hmm. Wonder why they didn't just call it "Fantasy" which is general/etc all on its own.

[–] hakase@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 year ago

&c is a common variation of "etc."
