Depending on the instance where the new piracy community is hosted, it could be a thousand times better than the original subreddit.

On Reddit you could openly discuss piracy, but had to be extremely careful with links and directly mentioning any specific tool or service. And yeah, using a base64 encode on a URL was often not good enough.

But host a Lemmy instance in a country that doesn't care about digital piracy and you're golden. In fact, if you're not for profit in anyway (including ads) even Brazil would work, but I'm sure there are even better choices out there.

My Argentina don't cry for Piracy, I think even the president pirates everything.

[–] Pulp@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Maybe. Have to get people to use it. Reddit was easy. We need to get good mobile apps

[–] dracul104@lemmy.sdf.org 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Good mobile apps are key, I agree. My main use of reddit was on mobile. Currently using Jerboa, which seems okay except it keeps logging me out for some reason.

I wish there was a way to respond to a comment. I can see it in the inbox, but I have to click into the thread and manually find it, to respond..

[–] RoosterBoy@lemm.ee 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Hold your finger in the void to the right of the username. It was an unnecessary feature added among a bunch of good ones like in-app image viewing.

Reply directly from Inbox works fine for me, both in website and in Jerboa app. What are you using to connect?

[–] GrindingGears@sopuli.xyz 2 points 1 year ago

Jerboa as well, on android. I actually just figured it out, I have to long press on the comment and the option to reply will drop down. I feel like my father using this app, but I sort of love it. I'm figuring it out!

[–] Raiden11X@programming.dev 5 points 1 year ago

It definitely can flourish here given the right circumstances. I haven't pirated anything in a long while, but I love seeing the community doing it's thing. I'll definitely be following along

I'm glad this Reddit blackout finally inspired me to make a Lemmy account. I already like it enough that I may or may not even go back to Reddit. Yarrr!

Reddit has been weird with comments, and formatting for me. I can actually copy and paste here without my comment getting kneecaped. :O

[–] J_C___@sh.itjust.works 16 points 1 year ago

Honestly hoping that Reddit does nothing so we can build a better commnuity here

[–] alternativeninja@lemmy.sdf.org 16 points 1 year ago

Thanks for linking to Lemmy. Not enough of the protest private pages did so.

[–] rowdy@lemmy.ml 14 points 1 year ago

Respect. Decentralization fits perfect with piracy anyhow.

[–] 00Lemming@lemmy.world 12 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Bravo to you. This was absolutely the right call and I hope you let it rot if there isn't a massive change of direction. Frankly, for me, even if they do roll things back I am still done with them. P2P is how the internet should be (funny considering torrenting has been a thing for how long now?) and thankfully we have guys like you to step up and help get this off the ground. Thanks!

[–] Bretzel@lemmy.world 11 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Noice, full blackout is the right choice

[–] C0balt_Blu@lemmy.ml 11 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Im prolly gonna stick to Lemmy even if Reddit magically apologizes and gives us each a free cookie. Much better comment interface, and it's not Reddit. :3

[–] db0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 1 year ago

ye I'm also got used to it quite nicely.

[–] KeroKira@lemmy.fmhy.ml 10 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I love Reddit, But plan on using Lemmy now too. Doesn't seem too bad.

[–] db0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I know, right? For me it's a drop in replacement. All that's required is for the people to stick around.

corporate bastards

[–] CapnAssHolo@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Hypothetically speaking, if this instance gets taken down would it be possible for the admin to recover the data and respawn it on a new instance?

[–] eric3a@lemmy.world 8 points 1 year ago

Here and reporting for pirate duty.

[–] Ataraxia@lemmy.world 8 points 1 year ago
[–] supernikio2@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 1 year ago (1 children)

What's going on? Why was it privated? Was everything archived? Where can I see old posts?

[–] db0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 1 year ago (1 children)
[–] supernikio2@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 1 year ago (3 children)

Where's the archive? Wouldn't restricting submissions be enough?

[–] db0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 17 points 1 year ago

No, it's a full blackout.

[–] dracul104@lemmy.sdf.org 3 points 1 year ago

Nah, fuck em, nuke it all, don't even give reddit the traffic from our old data. I deleted all my old comments and posts.

[–] _Stalwart_@lemmy.fmhy.ml 7 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Let's hope this makes Reddit change their minds, which I doubt so we might settle here. Can I get mod access here by the way?

[–] db0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Always good to see this pop in here. I'm already liking Lemmy much better so far too.

[–] L31FY@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Is this the Reddit shutdown until the 14th thing?

[–] db0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 17 points 1 year ago

yes, or maybe longer

[–] BlinkerFluid@lemmy.one 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

But what if they.... pirate, the um... piracy?

[–] db0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 1 year ago

playing our game means we've already won :D

[–] WhiteWolfLT@pawb.social 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Will the megathread be transfered here?

[–] db0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 14 points 1 year ago

it's already stickied
