I like lemmings but it might be a bit derogatory. Even with that I still think it's better than 'redditors', which always sounded/looked goofy to me.

Any ideas? What do we call Lemmy users?

My current vote is for lemmings. I think it's cute.

Given the rodent theming, lemmings is appropriate. It's also slightly self-deprecating, which is a plus when it comes to community monikers.

Most of the people migrating from Reddit wouldn’t have much of a problem with self-depreciation.

More poetic themes via Wikipedia β€œLemmings also appear in Arthur C. Clarke's 1953 short story "The Possessed", where their suicidal urges are attributed to the lingering consciousness of an alien group mind, which had inhabited the species in the prehistoric past.”

The past mascot was an alien

Huh. and i thought it was named after the guy from motorhead

Lemmings of course. No need to reinvent the wheel.

[–] can@sh.itjust.works 10 points 1 year ago

Yes, if we're lemmings surely we should be running on the wheel.

I think Lemmings is great because it's not something any PR team would approve of. It feels completely unincorporated.

I agree with everyone here on this, Lemmings is appropriate. Especially since most of the community likes it, I think choosing something that the community vibes with is important.

[–] young_broccoli@kbin.social 11 points 1 year ago

!!Leeemmings!! !!Leeemmings!!

I'm actually on kbin but I would consider changing to lemmy if i get to be a lemming.

[–] dojan@lemmy.world 17 points 1 year ago (1 children)

+1 for lemming. It just feels really appropriate, and who doesn't like lemmings? They're adorable!

I tried transforming the word Lemmy in the same way as demonyms for countries ending in Y just to see how it'd shake out.

Anything calling to anyone? πŸ˜…

Germany -> Germans -> Lemmans

Para/Uruguay -> Para/Uruguayans -> Lemmyans

Muscovy -> Muscovites -> Lemmites

Hungary -> Hungarians -> Lemmians

Norway -> Norwegians -> Lemmegians?

Turkey -> Turks? -> Lemms?

[–] Lemmington@sopuli.xyz 8 points 1 year ago

Lemmites and Lemmegians are best

I loke lemmings, I think it's a good reminder about how the dangers of letting any platform influence you too much.

If not lemmings, lemmons

[–] lori@kbin.social 14 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I've always been opposed to this kind of branding. Users are users, posts are posts, getting heavy into branding is always a bad sign to me.

[–] hllywluis@sh.itjust.works 7 points 1 year ago

I totally get where you're coming from but I think humanity's tribal nature makes us want to identify with something on the platform we're on.. Some type of name that defines all of us.

[–] bobaduk@lemmy.world 13 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I saw someone use "Lemmurs" the other day and I'm sticking with that pending a better idea.

[–] thedeserter@lemmy.fmhy.ml 9 points 1 year ago

I also agreed with lemmings on a previous post. Coming from Reddit, self deprecating is the least of my worries 🀣

[–] CaptainBasculin@lemmy.ml 9 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Why is lemmings deregatory, it kinda fits imo

[–] fomo_erotic@lemmy.ml 7 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Some old (wrong) thing about lemmings running off a cliff.

Turns out the nature photographers drove the lemmings off a cliff.

Lemurians, it is unique and isn't animal related.
