Canadian hosting would be ideal, unfortunately, it's fairly limited and usually more costly than some of the VPS options from the multitude of suppliers from our neighbors to the south.... or overseas, or something.
I get it, I don't necessarily agree that we should be doing that. Seems a bit disingenuous, but it is what it is. I'm an IT person living in southern ontario, so I've seen a lot of this kind of thing as an extension of my job. I'm happy to help where I can, but hosting isn't free, and I'm sure the proprietors of this node aren't made of money; so unless we all start to donate or otherwise pay - as a collective group - for hosting, then getting the cheapest hosting possible is going to be significantly important.
Now, if we could get someone to buy in, who can get a steep discount on a colo or for a VPS in Canada, then it may be an option to move it to canadian soil; if we cannot find a way to get a steep discount on it, then we're going to be stuck with whatever we can get.
I know of a way to host it with basically no cost if I can get the go-ahead from a specific group, but right now I don't have a line of communication with that group. Part of that group is responsible for a colo, so as long as we can source some fairly cheap server hardware, it shouldn't be a problem. though, IMO, getting their O.K. to do it will be the hardest part, even if I had an open dialog with them right now, I'm not very confident that they would give the go-ahead for something like this.
