The government needs to figure out how to crack down on this algo driven bot rot ASAP otherwise democracies are all going to fall.

The argument has always been that then the people in that country will never know the truth and rise up against their dictator. I'm not sure how much water that argument holds today given their current war...

Around the year 561 BC, Herodotus writes how Pisistratus intentionally wounded himself and his mules, asking the Athenian people to provide bodyguards for protection and reminding them of his prior accomplishments, including the port capture of Nisaea. Pisistratus had driven his chariot into the agora or marketplace of Athens, claiming he had been wounded by his enemies outside of town, and thus, the people of Athens selected some of their men to function as a bodyguard, armed with clubs rather than spears, for him. Previously, he had assumed control of the Hyperakrioi, which was not an aristocratic group like the other two Athens factions, by promoting his democratic program and securing a mutual agreement with the members or demos of the faction. For context, this guy leads a party that is part of a coalition in government at the moment. However, they only got 6% of the vote. He/they (the guy/the party but I find it amusing given the context that I could have been referring to his pronouns) is certainly not representative of the country as a whole.
More concerning is that the other parties in the coalition are also trying their best to mimic Trump.
When all your policies fail the only thing left to engage your voters is the culture war.
Peters has made a career out of courting the dumbest 5-10% of kiwis for at least the last 30 years. "Woke" is just his latest ill-defined hobby-horse to get his name in the paper.
He calls to end "DEI" while his party says they support Diversity & Inclusion. He believes in nothing.
I don't know how accurate it is to say he doesn't represent the country as a whole. At a minimum that phrasing is misleading.
no person represents the country as a whole but he is in government and that government got the votes of the majority of the people who voted. That's significant.
As you said nothing he said isn't aligned with ACT or National positions and certainly nobody else in government has rebuked him.
Trumpism and MAGA has arrived in NZ and is running the country. If you are not alarmed you should be.
