Thing is, though, anti catholicism runs deep among the evangelical crowd. This is, as far as the mega (maga) church crowd is concerned, a ringing fucking endorsement of Trump.

I live in a highly religious part of the country. 79% of the state is some form of christian.

I have had several conversations with people here who do not comprehend that catholics are christian. In fact I even had an argument about it here on Lemmy a while back. I wonder if someone will pop out again to try to tell me that catholics aren't christians.

That's such lunacy. Just because your denomination is different doesn't mean it has a monopoly on the religion. Catholics have that same vibe to me, just not as weird about it.

Trump would deport Jesus if he could.

[–] balsoft@lemmy.ml 6 points 2 weeks ago

Given the rate of executions during Trump's last tenure, I think it's feasible he would've crucified Jesus for the crime of existing while brown, if given the chance

but you see, american "christianity" is different. maga nuts and the far right would say 'better' or the only 'true' kind.

and "conscience", well that's "con"+"science", they don't believe in science, so toss that out. leaving only "con" which is exactly what their game is.

Yeah, let's ignore that Trump is an adulterer and rapist, Pope.

[–] makuus@pawb.social 5 points 2 weeks ago

One has to have a conscience to be bothered by it…

If I go pitch a tent in Vatican City and take up permanent residence there, presumably he will order the Swiss Guard not to deport me. Good to know.

as others have said, consort trump is not catholic so he could care less about the pope.

his spiritual advisor believes in prosperity theology.

imo, if you want to appeal to trump, better talk in his spiritual language, money.

The Vatican has gone woke...

[–] PhAzE@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 weeks ago

Oh no, will Christians listen to their leader The Pope or their leader The Trump?

[–] narr1@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

So is raping altar boys, though...

Yeah, I realized that after posting. I'm just mad at the moment, excuse my violent fantasies for a bit. What I tried to say is: what does it matter what this random old dude thinks of anything regarding anything to do with morality or conscience? He is the head of the worst institution in the last 2000 years or so grace the rest of us with their presence, whose only contributions to society is the stifling of progress, endless wars waged in the name of their imaginary friend because someone else (usually brown people) believe in THE SAME FUCKING IMAGINARY FRIEND, and the protection of child-rapists and other abusing vermin. Oh how I long for the day when the basilica of st. peter burns to the ground along with their corrupt institution.

I sure understand your frustration. The reason why it matters what the pope says is that a lot of people following trump are strong believers in the church. So the church saying it, may give that speech additional weight for exactly these people.

I was about to say that catholics aren't as politically fucked as the evangelicals, but I looked up the data and the difference is down to 5%.

When I was young and personally knew some catholics, they seemed so much more fun than the stuffy evangelicals. Their parents voted for Democrats and were much more permissive with their kids compared to protestants. Either my experience is fairly unique or catholics have changed.

I know evangelical and protestant don't mean the same thing but at least where I grew up almost all the protestants were evangelical or worse. Yeah it gets worse.

Please forgive the source, it doesn't appear to be biased.

Why are we placing blame on Trump when the current situation can be traced back to policies under Biden, such as open borders and the lack of a clear pathway to citizenship for immigrants? It seems we have forgotten the broader context of this issue.

[–] queermunist@lemmy.ml 2 points 2 weeks ago

What the hell does "open borders" mean? Do you think Biden didn't deport people?
