I was going to post this in /c/Canada, but figured I'd post it here first since we'd need someone to officially represent Lemmy.ca/Fedecan to make it happen and organize a sort of group-pledge from the lemmy.ca community.

They have tiers for a $500 Gold Sponsor, $1000 Diamond Sponsor, and $2500 Platinum Sponsor to get a logo on their website sponsor page. I figured aiming for $500 is reasonable.

Some of us have already given quite a bit. Reading further about Pixelfed after that, I'm getting a bit worried whether Pixelfed is worth supporting as much. I'd personally stay off that train for now and see what he/they do with the money they got so far.

The complaints others have said about Daniel S are genuine, but I say he deserves the benefit of doubt. He's just a guy, this is a massive project for one, he's an excellent coder but yeah he definitely has a history of being hot-headed and self-serving. I feel for him a lot, when you get so much attention, positive and negative feedback, dozens of issues across multiple projects you work on simultaneously, it can get to your head.

Consider the kind of person it takes, to work on something for years without being paid at full time developer rates, in hopes of making a viable alternative to a mainstream product. He is driven to get his creation out, which may have come at the cost of pushing others out of the way. To give another example, the Lemmy software is developed by people that have opinions that your average Lemmy users don't agree with.

I have already pledged a bit on kickstarter, Dan deserves a lot of slack. Give him time to flesh out and open the infrastructure to ensure the project grows beyond himself in a healthy way. If we want to put some more funds together through Fedecan for Pixelfed, count me in, mention me when we do and I'll contribute a bit to Fedecan with a note. Dan is a treasure from Grand Prairie, AB and we should value him for what he is, rather than expecting him to be perfect or held to an impossibly high standard.

I like this take. When I read some of Dan's concerning posts, I see someone who is really not used to working with others, not someone who is actively malicious

I have concerns that can be summed up by this Blog Post I read. Doubts about Pixelfed

Oof, I wasn't aware of this. Thanks for the link. The sub-linked open letter about his behaviour towards others is particularly concerning: https://dansup-open-letter.github.io/appendix/#behaviour

I'm still a bit torn, because I think Pixelfed (the software) is still worth supporting, but we can let more of the community decide. Ultimately the Lemmy.ca/Fedecan representative would have to decide anyway.
