Summary

Trump plans to impose tariffs of up to 100% on semiconductors manufactured in Taiwan, aiming to push U.S. tech companies like Apple, Nvidia, and AMD to produce chips domestically.

The tariffs target Taiwan's TSMC, a key supplier, despite its partial U.S. production in Arizona.

Trump criticized Biden’s CHIPS Act for funding companies like Intel and proposed tariffs as an alternative incentive.

Experts warn the move could raise prices for electronics as most TSMC chips are assembled in Asia before export to the U.S.

I thought "conservatives" couldn't invent a worse economic idea after "If the rich have more money, surely some of it will end up with the poor at some point", but here is "Just make everything more expensive so it becomes cheaper". Wow. It's almost impressive at this point.

I'm pretty sure TSMC has the means to hurt the US more than Trump realizes.

Even if he did realise, he wouldn't care as long as the grift keeps going & he can get back to golfing fairly soon

Stop underestimating them, they are not morons. They know exactly what they are doing, who this will hurt the most, who will gain the most,.and who they're going to blame for everything. They had 4 years to prepare, they wrote a whole plan, and this is just the beginning of them implementing it.

It's because once chips are made in USA, China will be able to invade Taïwan and Trump will not care at all.

Okay, so if crashing the global economy is the first step, what's the follow-up?

Initially I was thinking on how this is such a blatantly bad idea. I don't think that it'll attract chip makers to USA, but instead send the industries relying on those chip makers to other countries. Because as the text says it takes years to build a chip factory, and those industries downstream simply won't wait.

Then it clicked me - government debt. He might be trying to find new sources of income for the United-Statian government. They only need to last four years - if they ruin the economy later on, it is not his problem.
