I'm generally left-learning and I enjoy the usual left-leaning comedians - you know, TDS, Colbert, Kimmel and the likes.

But I also pride myself on being open-minded and listening to all sides, and I don't know any good right-leaning comedians. And ya know, if it's funny, I'll laugh at anything said by anyone.

So please make suggestions! Whose jokes and commentaries are worth listening to?

And in case it wasn't clear, this is NOT flamebait: I'm genuinely looking for good comedy material from comedians on the side of the political spectrum I'm not on, for my own education.

Please don't watch chappelle as people are suggesting. Dude is a transphobic bigot. He can't go 5 minutes without "waaah the trans waaah the woke are cancelling me actually I am the winner here that's why I talk about these same topics every show"

There aren't really any currently, honestly.

Bill Burr (who isnt actually a conservative) still tells "politically incorrect" or mocking progressive comedy kinds of jokes, without actually being shitty or hateful, so he might come closest. But even he is fairly progressive really, or at least he tries to be.

+1 for Bill Burr, who will mock anyone, pretty mercilessly.

Also, his cameo in Star Wars, after giving tons of shit to Star Wars fans, is an utter delight. (And made him a fan.)

Here's a video about it for ya.

And it gets to the point at around 50 minutes.

Haven't watched it yet, but I suspect it comes down to punching up vs. punching down, correct?

Mostly. Also that being a reactionary asshole isn’t conducive to making people laugh or feel good in any way.

[–] SteposVenzny 4 points 2 weeks ago

That’s in there, certainly, but that’s not the extent of it. And despite the title, it does actually have some examples of right wing comedians who are funny.

Others mention Chappelle here, and I want to just mention, I did watch his last special with an open mind, and I just want that hour back.

It was depressing on a couple of levels. But most importantly (for a comedian) I didn't find it even a little bit funny.

I like a good bit of dark comedy, and tragedy plus time, and all that.

But Dave Chappelle should pay for a therapist in private, instead of wasting my time.

Conservative art is always bullshit.

[–] tacosanonymous@lemm.ee 16 points 2 weeks ago

I don’t think there are any. Like, sure, there are people who vote right wing but when they incorporate their politics into their act it’s not good.

You can try older stuff, rednecks of comedy, or Chappell.

I see many folks here mentioning Dave Chapelle as a right-wing comedian, which is a joke in itself. Dave Chapelles' personal politics and much of the politics mentioned in his stand-up are not right-wing. He has a blend of center right/center left beliefs and supports progressive candidates. I understand there is controversy with his LGBTQ+ material and commentary, but that does not make all of his politics right-wing. This strikes me as coming from people who have little exposure to the black American community, where these attitudes are prevalent regardless of the individuals' other politics. It is slowly improving, but it isn't great. Frankly, I don't know why it is he continues to antagonize and harp on this for hours at a time. It is very strange and I know he's capable of much funnier material.

Some say a mind is like a parachute, works best when open. But I also like this from Warhammer 40k that "An open mind is like a fortress with its gates unbarred and unguarded." There are a bunch of ideas that you don't have to give credence to because you already know they're trash. You can seek them out for edification, but please don't think open mindedness means you have to respect every idea with consideration, that you have to listen to people just because they're talking, etc.

Anyway, good luck with your search. I've not been exposed to right wing comedy that's funny.

Donald Trump is pretty funny.

Bill Maher is libertarian
Ron White
Kathleen Madigan
Bill Engvall
Dennis Miller Not really right wing as old & whiney
Joe Rogan thinks he's funny

Finally a real list that doesn't include Dave Chapelle - whom I already knew and whom find extremely unfunny.

I do enjoy Bill Maher very much. I don't always agree with him but at least he makes good points and he's funny. If nothing else, I respect his ability to address points regardless of which side of the political divide they traditionally fall on.

I've watched Joe Rogan too - not for comedic value but to listen to some of his guests - and he sucks ass. I didn't think he was trying to be funny, because he really isn't. Buf if he is, it's not working at all. He's just a terrible Youtuber the same way countless other Youtubers are, just with a bigger audience, as far as I can tell.

I don't know any of the others you mention. So I will gladly check them out now. Thanks!

i think i remember ellen’s most recent special having some okay bits?

[–] MajorHavoc@programming.dev 2 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

Yeah. I gotta admit I laughed at Ellen's (completely unrelatable) "relatable" jokes about being ultra wealthy.

I dunno if she counts for this request?

I guess she's more conservative than many comedians, but I'm guessing her wife makes sure she still votes in favor of civil liberties like marriage rights.

[–] JayTreeman 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

She's friends with bush... Don't assume anything

[–] MajorHavoc@programming.dev 1 points 2 weeks ago

Good point.

Have only seen short clips and not once found it funny, but since you asked...

Fox's counter to regular late night shows: https://www.foxnews.com/shows/gutfeld

[–] ExtremeDullard@lemmy.sdf.org 2 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Yeah I watched some Gutfeld. He does go through the motions but his jokes never really land. It's kind of like having a conversation with an AI chatbot: it's convincing to a degree but something is off and it's nowhere near as enjoyable as talking to a real person.

Idk Dave Chappell maybe
