I can't believe this. Mozilla is now doubling down on ads in Firefox. Improving online advertising through product and infrastructure https://blog.mozilla.org/en/mozilla/improving-online-advertising/ No wonder they removed ublock origin lite to test the waters #privacy

@nixCraft@mastodon.social Well time to start looking for replacements. Any suggestions that are multi platform? I'd try Arc but no Linux or Android support.

I still think this is a good thing. Yes the world would be better with less advertising, but that isn't practical. Modern internet needs ads for monetization.

I can't say I trust any other ad agency to make private ads. Given Mozilla's name recognition, it of all privacy focused companies can do something about it.

Though I'll admit that this push to ads is costing a lot of user trust.

@nixCraft@mastodon.social Well, it was good while it lasted. On to the next.

@nixCraft@mastodon.social if this leads to advertising without tracking users I'm in, but I won't hold my breath. Google, Meta, Microsoft, and other big players won't respect private by default.

@nixCraft someone will create ways to block them. For now use a adblock mini server between your gateway & your local networks
There are distros #piehole specific for this

#AdaFruit #UblockOrigin #MicroController #OpenSource #POSIX #programming

@nixCraft@mastodon.social

isn't this more of a win for Arc browser?

[–] devcoffee@fosstodon.org 1 points 1 month ago

@nixCraft@mastodon.social this really only makes sense if they either WANT to abandon Firefox or if they just don't care. there's no way that, with their market share being what it is, they can honestly expect to survive this.

unless they gamble that, with chrome being even worse, they can still come out on top.

but in no scenario will this increase their market share. so they have given up on that angle. they want to make money this way

Firefox maybe on the out as well?

we do this fully acknowledging our expanded focus on online advertising won’t be embraced by everyone in our community, and knowing

that as we create innovative approaches

we will need to account for our users’ evolving expectations. That’s never a comfortable position to be in, but we firmly believe that

_building a better future for online advertising is critical to our overall goal

of building a better future for the internet

@nixCraft@mastodon.social yeah, THAT is why I'd rather trust some entity like Microsoft with my data - at least I know that they respect my choices, although they sometimes tend to forget and reset.

At least they're not monumental assholes about it.

They will also end up with me not using their browser.

@nixCraft RIP Firefox. Better moving to options like Mullvad Browser https://mullvad.net/en/browser or Librewolf
