Last week's thread here

Welcome to this week’s casual kōrero thread!

This post will be pinned in this community so you can always find it, and will stay for about a week until replaced by the next one.

It’s for talking about anything that might not justify a full post. For example:

Something interesting that happened to you
Something humourous that happened to you
Something frustrating that happened to you
A quick question
A request for recommendations
Pictures of your pet
A picture of a cloud that kind of looks like an elephant
Anything else, there are no rules (except the rule)

So how’s it going?

Stuck in interviews all week. Trying to find somebody to help with my project. Is a full time job right now. In other news, we are buying a boat and planning on living on it. All the inspections have been organised this week so we are one step closer and I’m really excited!

That's so cool, like a sailboat/yacht? I love the idea of getting a liveaboard boat and doing something wild like sailing across the Pacific in it.

I say this as someone with exactly zero sailing experience, but the idea going such a huge distance using mostly the wind would be such an adventure.

[–] Username@lemmy.nz 6 points 7 months ago

Thanks! Yes a sailboat. We’ve been getting ready for this for quite a while. Took a bunch of courses and bought a starter boat that we would go away for a few months at a time in to see if it was really something we could do and to make sure the dog could handle it. We did that for a few years and learnt what we wanted from a full time boat. I hope the inspection goes well. Can’t wait to finally start the big adventure! It will probably be quite a while until we feel experienced enough to cross oceans but I’m just excited to spend more time on the water!

I finally did it! I got around to getting a COVID jab and so am now ready for the winter, when my body will teach me there are plenty of other ways to get sick.

So my DIY soldering job over the weekend seems to have worked and I successfully fixed my fan! Getting some thinner solder made it much easier.

Now to find more things to solder 😃

[–] FloofahNZ@lemmy.nz 4 points 7 months ago

Glad to see you got the fan working. Well done 👍

Amazing! You're pretty much a super hero now.

[–] eagleeyedtiger@lemmy.nz 3 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Guess I'll need to come up with my superhero name now!

[–] Dave@lemmy.nz 3 points 7 months ago

Your username works as a superhero name!

Omg I love calico cats!! What a cute problem to have.

[–] Dave@lemmy.nz 3 points 7 months ago

Oh man the other weekend we stayed at my in-laws and the cat kept sitting on my laptop. I knew it was a meme but it's less cute and more annoying in real life.

I've noticed that Lemmy 0.19.4 has been released. Looks like quite a few changes! I won't be in a rush to update, but will start the process of testing on a test server and watching chatter from other instances to see if there are any issues.

It looks like there will be a bit of downtime with this release. Once I have a good idea of the process and time needed I will schedule a time and date to do the upgrade.

I wasted money buying something I didn't need.

I have a good graphics card and I don't play any graphically demanding games, but I saw a better graphics card on trademe going for pretty cheap $600. So I try to snipe this auction at the last minute but it's gone up to $700 now. $700 is way more than I want to pay for this card but I can't let someone get this card for $700 because they would be to good of a deal for them. So I place an auto bid of $810 thinking I'll make them work for it and that's a reasonable price. But I end up winning the auction for 750.

Now I have to find a new game to play that justifies the purchase and buy a cpu because my current cpu is bottlenecking the performance.

Time to experiment with running generative AI models!

[–] Fizz@lemmy.nz 3 points 7 months ago (1 children)

I've done that a bit on my 2070s and they run quite well. But now I'm going to amd which have poor performance in Ai workloads because I think they're missing on board aicores or some core tech Nvidia uses.

[–] Dave@lemmy.nz 2 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Ah right. Game time then. I don't have recommendations for a GPU heavy game if you think CPU is a bottleneck, but Steam has a very generous refund policy so I'd just go find some new game that interests you from the last year or two, crank up the graphics, and see how it goes.

I've been enjoying Baldur's Gate, which I'm having to run on low graphics settings, but I'm running it on a laptop that's at least a couple of years old and it has integrated graphics so I don't think I can judge it's GPU requirements 😆

[–] Fizz@lemmy.nz 2 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Also just realized I need a new power supply. My cope is that I need this gpu to move to Wayland even though I've been on Wayland for 5 days on my nvidia card and haven't had any show stopper issues.

I think its finally time for me to play through cyberpunk 2044 that I brought on release and never played past when that poly dude died.(which was an hour or two in). Max graphics modded to hell and I'll bust the bong out of my cupboard. It will be like I'm high-school again except not poor and not staying up past midnight.

[–] Dave@lemmy.nz 2 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

Is my memory right that AMD tends to be preferred for Linux as I seem to remember people always being wary of Nvidia.

And are you talking about Cyberpunk 2077? I can't seem to find a 2044. Is it good? I never played it, but remember launch reviews being bad.

I don't normally play games at launch (relevant xkcd) so it's about old enough for me to take a look. Baldur's Gate was a bit of an exception for me, I didn't get it directly at launch but was earlier this year, though as I understand it, it was in early access for years. Plus it had great reviews, it was reasonably priced, and was an AAA game that I could buy DRM free from GOG so a bit of a perfect storm to pull me in.

Anyone know how I can troubleshoot network issues?

I've been having issues for a while now. It might have been started about the time I changed ISPs and swapped one ISP router for another ISP router. The actual wifi is provided by a couple of Amplifi mesh points plugged into the ISP router, but if the internet stops working then restarting the ISP router is what fixes it so I'm assuming that's the problem. Unfortunately I don't have another one to test with.

Internet is fibre, so it goes through a chorus box first, but I don't seem to need to restart that, hence why I think it's a network issue.

I also have Uptime Kuma monitoring a few things. One is the connection to the router, 192.168.1.1, which often fails until I restart it (at least a couple of times a week). This connection always seems to fail while internet access is gone, so that's another reason I think it's a network issue.

I've asked about this before and done some things and thought it was fixed but then a week later is starts happening again.

Anyone got tips for troubleshooting this?

I've been trying to ride my bike into work instead of driving lately, but today it decided it's had enough of hauling my fat arse around and the derailleur hanger snapped in half.

Probably should use it as an excuse to upgrade, but I hate shopping for expensive things.

[–] Dave@lemmy.nz 2 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Wouldn't that repair be reasonably straightforward? Maybe not for me 😆, but maybe for you or at least for a bike shop. Easier than trying to find a new bike.

Alternatively, get one off trademe without thinking too hard and just put up with it.

Or if you like having expensive things (even if you don't like shopping for them), if you have a mortgage you can get a cheap loan for an ebike.

[–] Panq@lemmy.nz 2 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Replacing the hanger is probably a five minute job. Finding the correct one is much harder. Replacement spoke is cheap, but making a wheel run true is a bit fiddly and I'm not particularly good at it.

I've already put aside plenty of money for an upgrade, it's the choosing one that I hate.

Also: NZ has a Workride scheme where you can get a bike with no GST paid off over a year from your pre-tax wages/salary. It works out somewhere around 50% off the actual sale price for a typical worker (though some of that is from your own Kiwisaver contribution and/or student loan repayments, which you're technically just putting off and not actually saving in the very long term).

[–] Dave@lemmy.nz 2 points 7 months ago

I didn't know about the workride scheme! Personally I'm not sure I can justify the cost if an ebike even at 50%ish off, and I'm not going to be riding it to work on account of working from home most of the time. But I'll definitely be telling others!
