Convicted B.C. serial killer Robert Pickton is in critical condition and undergoing surgery after he was assaulted by another inmate in a Quebec prison on Sunday.

The Correctional Service Canada (CSC) confirmed in a statement Tuesday that Pickton was the victim of a "major assault" at the maximum-security Port-Cartier Institution.

Two sources, including one police source, told Radio-Canada that Pickton is between life and death.

Pickton was taken to a hospital for treatment and the assailant is in solitary confinement according to the Quebec provincial police, the Sûreté du Québec (SQ), which is investigating.

He gave meat to women's shelters that was from other humans. I hope he suffers horribly for a few weeks then dies.

Well, more like 20th century. He was active from early 90s to 2002.

Crazy we never heard about him in history classes then.

Why would you? Pretty sure other than colonists my social studies didn't talk about serial killers untill law class in grade 11

Last I heard the history of the October Crisis wasn't being taught either.

Quebec is often smarter than the rest of Canada.

What? Do you think there have ever been only like 4 serial killers in all of history and you learn about all of them in school? There have been thousands all over the world in just the past few decades.

I grew up in the Vancouver area at that time, and was family friends with the family of one of the victims. No one even gave a shit at the time it was happening.

in 21st century

That's an adjective missing a noun.

in the 21st century

That's what I think you meant.

Mostly victims were native women he picked up on the street, I believe. The kind of people the cops actively avoid thinking about, even today. Another Picton could happen today, no problem.

This is the best summary I could come up with:

The Correctional Service Canada (CSC) confirmed in a statement Tuesday that Pickton was the victim of a "major assault" at the maximum-security Port-Cartier Institution.

Pickton was taken to a hospital for treatment and the assailant is in solitary confinement according to the Quebec provincial police, the  Sûreté du Québec  (SQ), which is investigating.

He said Pickton was undergoing surgery shortly before 10:30 a.m. PT and it will take a few weeks before the SQ transfers the case to the Director of Criminal and Penal Prosecutions (DCPC) to press charges.

The incident at the Port-Cartier Institution, located around 850 kilometres northeast of Montreal, did not involve staff and "appropriate actions have been taken" with regard to the assailant, the CSC said in an earlier statement.

The remains or DNA of 33 women, many of whom were Indigenous, were found on Pickton's pig farm in Port Coquitlam, about 25 kilometres east of downtown Vancouver.

In an interview with Radio-Canda's Tout un matin Tuesday, federal Public Security Minister Dominic LeBlanc said an internal investigation will be carried out at the Port-Cartier prison to shed light on the circumstances of the attack.
