While we do blame parents for letting their kids be on the Internet and have devices with little to no supervision, there is another culprit that I blame as well. I don't know what it is called, but I'd like to call it the "children deserve privacy" movement.
There is no nuance to the movement at all. They label parental control filters as "surveillance technology", encourage hiding inappropriate/uncomfortable experiences the kids face from their parents and normalise children looking at content not meant for them (for ex. pornography and graphic violence) because "hormones" and "privacy".
Remember back in the day when we as kids used to be told not to share our personal information and real face online? Well, this advice is almost dying.
In the age of inappropriate bootleg cartoons and live-action videos aiming towards a (VERY) young audience and 6-year-olds making "emoji cat heat" videos and watch Hazbin Hotel and Andrew Tate, when I ever have kids, I am going to stricly monitor their online activity and not give them a phone until they reach a certain age.
