MODERATORS
You have to be a Canadian citizen to sign the petition.
The website says that residents can sign also, not just citizens
By join the fediverse, do you mean instances moderated by the federal government? What would be the desired outcome?
I'd be happy to have an "official" Mastodon instance. If individual politicians want to engage with their constituents, they can use any old Mastodon (or Lemmy, or whatever) instance. But having government agencies use a Mastodon instance for official communications would provide some insulation from the whims of capricious corporations.

The corporations need to get out the way. Facebook has put people lives in peril as they took down emergency messages.
Why doesn't it say fediverse? Even in scare quotes. I don't think they would actually do it, but I'm imagining a nightmare scenario where they try launching their own platform.
@CanadaPlus @RandomCanuck Even worse, they might contract it out to some corporate development firm, and spend big bucks for an inferiour app like they did with #ArriveCan.
