I was just having this conversation yesterday. Also live on my own, I think mine is 60/40 fridge/freezer, and I need more freezer space. I'm sure I waste a lot of energy with the freezer door open trying to fit everything in like a game of Tetris. I don't understand the law of physics that says that when I take something out of the freezer and use some of it, there's no longer space to put the (now smaller) thing back in? I can only assume it's freezer gremlins messing with me. Ideally a 50/50 or 40/60 fridge freezer would do me I think, but when you're limited to buying cheap and / or second hand you don't tend to have many options.

This is like when you buy some sort of disassembled product in a box and then realize later that you need to return it. Suddenly the box has become smaller because not everything seems to fit back to where it was.
It's like one of those low level witch curses isn't it. "May you never be able to fit the thing back into the thing from whence it came"
I'd love a 50/50 top/bottom fridge and freezer. I tend to buy in bulk and then whittle down the freezer section while eating the perishables before they spoil. Or freeze what I can't use.
Even with a household of two, the standard 70/30 (fridge's favor) is not sufficient for buying frozen bulk. At the same time, vertical freezers aren't the most energy efficient, because the heavy cold air comes out when you open the door.
The best solution I've found is a dedicated fridge, and a chest freezer! Ideal ratio for me is around 60/40 in favor of the freezer, but unfortunately our current place is too small for a decent sized chest freezer.
I literally fantasize about having enough space in my home for a chest freezer.
God, I'd love a chest freezer. Definitely no space for one though. Maybe someday though :)
For the two of us, I like the side-by-side layout (interior pic), but I am aware that it is not as energy efficient as freezer-on-the-bottom styles.
We like having ice & water on the the outside so we don't have to open it up to make cold drinks. We also use about 3 gallons of milk a week, so two gallons of them go in the door. The bins on the bottom mostly hold cheese in one and cold-hearty produce like carrots, celery, and apples in the other. P.S. I don't have this particular refrigerator make/model, but it is close enough.
I'm not sure what our ratio is, but we have a freezer on bottom drawer (which I love) plus a small standalone freezer in our garage and a side-by-side fridge also in the garage. I'm guessing it all works out to about 60:40.
