In my experience it's not always something you just "are", like being gay. Personally I do feel like it's something I've always been, but I know many people that don't feel that way.

Generally, if you identify as a furry then you're a furry. If you want to stop identifying as a furry then you can stop identifying as a furry. If you feel like it's deeper than that then you can come to terms with whatever that means for you.

In terms of a test, just expose yourself to some furry-related media and see if you like it. From the tone of your post I'm going to guess you might have a negative bias towards furries, so it might be a little harder to get past that initial kneejerk feeling to figure out what your own real feelings are.

Above all, if you haven't interacted with the furry community before you should know that literally anything you want to identify as will be welcomed here. Furries are the most radically-accepting group I've ever seen. Be yourself and we'll celebrate it with you.

Where did you get the expression that I'm negative about the furry community? I really like the community. Like every interaction I had with a furry was a good one and as far as I know most of them are amazing people. I'm scared that I may identify with a community because I want to be long and not because I am that

"I've come to grips" read like there is reluctance or that you didn't actually want to be one. I mistook it as a negative bias but yes your situation makes sense in that context. There is a surprisingly common phenomenon where people who are first exposed to furries through the internet hate machines end up in the pipeline to eventually becoming a furry, and they end up with similar-looking posts to yours.

You don't need to be a "true furry" to hang out in the community - just hang out where the furries are. Being a "furry" is an extremely light label - there are "furries" I know that are "less furry" than some people who don't even know what furries are. If all you need is a community to hang out with, the furry community is not going to check membership cards and deny you entry. People come and go in the fandom all the time, and people even stop identifying as furries later on. There is no checklist of things you need to be to be a furry. You don't need a fursona, you don't need to be into fursuiting, you don't need to have furry friends, you don't need to be a therian, you don't need to profess your furriness IRL, and you don't need to have some "deep-rooted furriness" to be "valid". If you put the label on, congrats you're a furry. You'll see people without dumb animal avatars or silly names in the furry community, and they're no different than you.

As before, the furry community is very accepting, and even if you outright present yourself as a non-furry you will still get the same level of support from the community - if you still can't shake the feeling that you're an "impostor" of some kind, just exist in the communities without putting the label on. I guarantee that over time you'll figure out what this means for you if you expose yourself to the culture over time.
