One thing I don't understand about lemmy, I can see an overall score, but at least on desktop, for some comments I can also see upvote and downvote count separately, but not for all. And the comments are in the same thread. Is this something users control?

Might be something related to specific communities? On desktop, and I can see separate counts when I hover the points here, and that's the case everywhere I'm looking.

My bad, figured it out :) They simply appear when you downvote a comment. If you upvote, the counters don't appear.

Ah ok. But I meant right next to the buttons.

Don't worry I removed the down vote

lol. don't worry about the downvotes, i'll accept them in the name of science

but i've also found out just by browsing different threads, the number appears when there are any downvotes at all on the comment without you downvoting. so if there are no downvotes and only upvotes the two numbers won't show up.

Some instances don't allow downvoting at all, so I'm not sure if a visible downvote count would be particularly meaningful anyway.

Yep. But I know beehaw doesn't allow downvoting. And being subbed from another instance I can still downvote and it shows up for me
