I remember hearing this rumor when I was young, but basically when the rumor is that when you go to a auto repair shop, they will fix your initial problem, but in turn they will "break" another part of your vehicle so that you would return later and give them more money.

So are there any evidence of this happening? I doubt there's actually proof about this, but I wouldn't be surprised if there was.

Not sure about them causing new, real issues, but I know they'll try to sell fixes for problems that don't exist. A classic is replacing filters whether they need it or not. I had a dealership 'replace' an air filter I knew was clean without asking first, and they tried to charge me for it until I asked for the old one back.
