I really think it's down to the mere perception of it being complicated. Non-techies freak out as soon as you begin raving about the possibilities of self-hosting, de-federation etc. I think a 2-3 minute primer hosted on YT would help; ideally narrated by someone who is not a nerdy-looking white guy.
