I liked to use this 'trick' because reddit was often one of the only results that provided positive and negative feedback for products or ideas. I wouldn't trust a "top 10 X thing" site, but people talking back and forth about specific pros and cons and comparing options? That seems much more trustworthy. You could find forums of similar or better quality, but then you need to know which and potentially sign up as well.
