My take is that they we shouldn't allow them to get close to the fediverse because there's no way that they are doing this for good of the users. I will go as far as saying that we shouldn't federate with them. I'm probably a minority with that take.
I might not even be from this instance, but I do agree that this probably will just bring spam to Lemmy and that federating with them would probably be detrimental.
If nothing else, I tend to agree with one of the arguments that an instance made recently: "meta federating will bring in billions of users and we will not be able to moderate it when it touches our instance"
That sounds pretty reasonable, and although I do think that you inherently need quite a few users for something like Lemmy to work, you don't really need that many, so federating with them would really only cause problems.
If someone from an unfederated instance wanted to access this community, they could just create an account on it or a federated instance; it's not like it's uncommon to make alts (or new accounts in general). Overall I just think it would lead to more spam content and moderation issues on FMHY.
I'm willing to see what it looks like, but I'd support defederation.
They're known for spying on you and I'm willing to bet my head that that's what they will do, it's facebook and it will always be facebook, no matter the name or platform.
Yeah, I know, but it's possible it could drive more users to the fediverse- for example, if they federate, then try to monetize their platform in such a way that users drift away to other instances to avoid ads or what-have-you.
We don't need to federate with them for them to make fediverse more known and attract users to us. That's what I think at least.
