Sounds like ChromeOS?
Hey, even ChromeOS itself runs off of the computer.
ChromeOS has its moments. It works great for most school and generic office work. It also works great for businesses that have designed around having all their software on the web.
But it's quite limited as soon as you need to run something specialized. And having to develop web UIs for everything is a lot of effort. Even when options exist, they might not be the best options.
But by no means do I want every OS to be like it. And I don't understand why anyone would want Windows to become more cloud focused. You already can access everything on the cloud from Windows. It doesn't need any changes for that. And I critically need strong support for local apps, as I don't want unnecessary subscriptions or for my PC to completely not work without internet.
As an aside, almost the entire reason I still use windows is because I'm lazy and don't wanna deal with gaming on Linux. If windows adds any friction to their one use case for me, I'm just gonna switch to Linux 100%.
Honestly ChromeOS no longer really feels like it's trying to fit this niche outside of an academic setting. They can now install and run both graphical linux programs and android apps like native.
