I dislike how a lot of sentences for crimes seem so darn lenient. They did the crime. Give them a longer sentence or some shit like ffs
rank all the crimes and then give relative sentences. In the rankings include torture, sexual torture, kidnapping, rape of children, hijacking a plane, slavery, terrorism.
Years ago rape used to be a capital crime, ie, people were sentenced to death for rape. When that sentence for rape was reduced to imprisonment the murder rate went down. When everything has a severe sentence there is nothing to stop criminals from committing the worst crimes.
We (as a society) still assume the best in people. And the law just wasn’t built to take into account irredeemable people. We really need to be more old school French about things.
Like, I get this idea if it's things like shoplifting or taking drugs. Like yes give them lenient crimes. But things like rape is just... 7 years is not enough. Especially considering the trauma the victim will have to live with for the rest of their life.
That's the thing I hate about abusers, is that sure if they get caught and sent to jail they only have to deal with it for a few years, or they don't get to see the person they abused. But when it comes to the victim in that case, they're going to have to live with this for the rest of their life. They can't turn it off, they have to experience flashbacks, avoiding certain places, seizing up whenever they see someone who reminds them of their abuser. ETC. You know? 7 years... not enough.
(Also this comment isn't attacking you, I'm attacking the whole system man)
People should not be defined by their past or past victimhood. People are strong and most manage to live good lives after trauma.
I know. But I just know for me, that I'm just... angry that I have to live with it, whereas my abuser doesn't get the same effect for what he did to me. You know?
I feel the same sometimes.
When something bad is done and is on purpose the sentences seem so light and short in comparison that it never makes sense to me.
