At least with a custom rom flashed. I doubt they are rooted, since that would open a huge attack surface.

I also did not want to downplay their efforts. Arne is doing a great job of making open source privacy friendly apps more accessable to common users by providing a coherent branding and a cleaner more modern UI. Maybe somewhat similar to snikket's initiative, yet broader.
