Hi all. Welcome to the Lemmy c/Portland.
I've been on federated sites for awhile, and tried to mod this community awhile back, but adoption had been slow and I let it sit.
As such, it's available for us to make it whatever you want. Please make sure to follow the lemmy.ml rules.
I also humbly request we attempt to not fall into some of the issues with r/Portland where it devolves into a crime blog/NextDoor-like space or become a platform for some of the local PACs to push their agendas (on any side).
Lets just be neighborly and if we disagree, then we'll work it out. If the place takes off, then we'll work together to codify more custom ground rules for discussion.
With that said, howdy neighbors.
Definitely not like r/PortlandOR, yikes!
I was always under the impression that is why PortlandOR was created. More of the conservative/right "free speech" version or Portland.
Yeah that sucks tbh
r/Portland liberals: "We need to deal with the 'homeless problem'. The city government should 'crack down' on them. Solutions that don't involve harassing them are complicated and expensive, but someone should do something..."
r/PortlandOR chuds: "Let's go out there ourselves and grind homeless people into a pulp ourselves instead of waiting for PPB to do it for us"
Yea, not really any middle ground between the two. I have high hopes for this new frontier.
My hope is that this comm can grow to represent a "united left" faction of online Portland communities, now that people are trickling in.
It sucks that on r/Portland I almost always see left-of-liberal viewpoints in response to center-right comments that are so prominent there. It would be nice to have a place where constructive discussion can be had and opinions can be refined, since I know in real life such views are fairly well represented among our neighbors.
I hope that our mod @polymerwitch@lemmy.ml is sympathetic to cultivating this sort of space. At minimum they recognize here in this post the crimeblogging happening on the subreddit which is a significant issue.
