It seems like they are down for a longer time now. How will they recover? Does longer down mean they will have to do more catching up with other instances? Can I get updates somewhere?

After doing a WHOIS, it appears that Lemmy.ml is hosted on OVHCloud.

As follow up on that, OVH cloud does appear to be doing some maintenance on their infrastructure: https://www.status-ovhcloud.com/
