Data Hoarder

We are digital librarians. Among us are represented the various reasons to keep data -- legal requirements, competitive requirements, uncertainty of permanence of cloud services, distaste for transmitting your data externally (e.g. government or corporate espionage), cultural and familial archivists, internet collapse preppers, and people who do it themselves so they're sure it's done right. Everyone has their reasons for curating the data they have decided to keep (either forever or For A Damn Long Time (tm) ). Along the way we have sought out like-minded individuals to exchange strategies, war stories, and cautionary tales of failures.

I've been convinced to build my own NAS again instead of going with a Synology and I'm thinking there are probably parts that don't matter if you buy used vs new but I'm curious what your thoughts are?

SAS controller/HBA and SAS hard drives targeted for datacenters

Everything else feels risky IMHO

My NAS was built almost entirely with Ebay parts in 2018 and is still humming just fine, I had a water leak when I moved into my house and it hosed 2 of my WD Gold Enterprise drives. If I remember correctly the PSU was the only thin I put in that was new.
