I know the discussion of ownCloud vs NextCloud is as old as time but most of those discussions focus on the photo and file syncing features. I wanna know if ownCloud or NextCloud would be better for office and collaborative work. Stuff like hosting and running Collabora, CalDAV, CardDAV, file sharing.

If using it as just a file server, owncloud is superior for its stability probably because it's tested better. I've had nextcloud break on production multiple times. It moves fast and breaks things, which is not ideal for production environments. Nextcloud has a bunch of apps, and at first I tried several and they were cool, but now I prefer reliability over a bunch of half-baked apps. I run both nc and oc by the way. Nc has better mobile app support and some cool apps, oc is frustrating because of lack of features, but it is rock solid compared to nc's frustrating breakage. Hopefully quality increases but it's been years of sometimes very painful production issues.

I have been running NC on debian for years, upgrading all the way from somewhere below 20 to currently 26 on the stable channel. The only thing that ever broke anything for me is switching php7.4 to 8.1, and that only because I'm a bit of a noob at php things and didn't properly install all relevant packages on my first try. So I would offer that as another anecdote.

I have also been using Nextcloud for years and have never had a problem with the software.
