Why not just contribute to Matrix, which is already well established and tries to 'discordify' their ecosystem, too?
I'm not dev of that project, I'm just spreading the word.
From what I see, it is not even functional yet, not even prototype.
But there is an issue open about making bridge to Matrix. So if they are talking about bridge, then I assume that they are using something else as their core protocol.
I agree, it would make much more sense to recycle Matrix for Discord clone/client rather than implementing something new from scratch.
But then again, I did not go look into the source code. Maybe they are using Matrix or fork of Matrix, maybe XMPP, I don't know. Would be nice if their readme or wiki would go in more detail about this.
sad to hear :/ keep us posted if you know any news! :)
In my view, what this ultimately is is a free Discord client. The server is there because I assume the developer liked Discord's API and wanted to be able to self host a server using it, but I imagine the majority of users will be interested in using this client with discord.com.
Keep in mind that "don't use proprietary platform, switch to x/y/z" doesn't account for the unfortunate reality that people may have contacts on that platform and switching wholesale and cutting off contact with those people is an unreasonable tradeoff. While a completely free service would be ideal, using a free client with a non-free service is still an improvement.
