I still want one of those drives that used a regular ol' cassette tape (like for music). Those were bitchin'!
Every now and then, I see a business that still uses ZIP disks, too.
When I worked at a university help desk (which was a while ago, but not nearly so long ago as what I'm about to say might suggest) the number of people who came in because the floppy disk they were using to store the only copy of their thesis or dissertation had stopped working was too damn high.
Seen this a lot with older USB thumbsticks. The crystal that generates the clock signal can break. That might all be internal to the silicon these days.
