How close are you with the parents? Distant relatives, less formal. Close family and friends, more formal.

It's for my niece. But I am the odd duck going through shit so I could probably get away with the unshaven, trackie bums and stained t-shirt. I may as well milk everything I'm going through.

Strategically, if you show up looking like a bum, it may prevent you being invited in the future. Not a bad thing, depends on the situation.

I also have the living in a different state excuse. Having a backup plan is a good idea
