How did Nintendo play any role in this situation?

I would say Microsoft honestly just for the fact they tried to say MS would have to pay for every gamepass game made in Unity that gets downloaded.

When I heard that either there was gonna be some quick quiet talks or I'd read that MS has bought Unity outright in a few days.

I think it's still unconfirmed, but the rumors are that some of the big names stepped in to pressure Unity to reverse their decisions.
