I have secured a metric fuck-tonne of Fancy Feast cat food free of charge. The thing is it went out of date end of August. Does that stuff really go off in such a manner that not even iron guts felines can’t eat it? I mean, cats can eat some weird shit, should this be a concern?
I reckon the cat would let you know.
It should be ok for as long as there’s no deep rust, deep dents, swelling, or hissing of gas/spurting of food when you open it. https://www.thespruceeats.com/how-long-does-canned-food-really-last-5114518
Taste and smell aren’t always indicators of safety so look to the other signs for that. Thankfully botulism is really rare these days so if the can is in good shape and contents seem fine you should be ok to feed it
Thank you!
Tinned food basicallly does not go off. Some foods can slowly change things like texture or nutrient availability (especially vegetables) so it might not be quite as good after a while, but is a long and ongoing process. The dates on tinned food are basically a manufacturer's best guess as to when the quality of the food will have deteriorated to the point they don't recommend it as still being at its best, and they range from conservative estimates to completely made up. Especially if it is only just out of date I would have absolutely no hesitation in using it.
Oh Kay! Thanks rave!
I wouldn't believe so.
