Was wondering what this instance is going to do if/when a lot of Reddit users migrate to Lemmy instances. From what I've read, there's a high chance that a lot of instances will go down due to the amount of activity and new users.

Is this instance going to restrict registrations temporarily during it, or will it leave them open and hope for the best?

I'd guess it depends on what role the operators want to play here... Is absorbing (the good parts of) that community a goal? This seems like the most impactful time to keep the doors open if so, to try and help the network reach a critical mass.

Otoh maybe this community comes first and they're more interested in ensuring the lights stay on during the chaos.

I just came from reddit today so I definitely don't speak for anyone here :) but that seems like the determining factor?

Just tagging in to agree with both points (hands?) and to self-report another newcomer fleeing the growing hellscape that is reddit to this increasingly relevant thread. So, there’s two of us, at least?

Welcome to both of you! I agree, that this is a crucial time to be accepting registrations, and that's what we plan to keep doing. The only thing we haven't quite decided yet is whether we will have registrations open on lemmy and kbin at the same time, or if we shut down new lemmy registrations once we have kbin up and running

My take is that at some point open registrations either lead to the site getting overloaded or become a magnet for spammers, trolls, and disinfo. So one approach is to leave them open as long as there's a fair amount of spare hardware capacity and there aren't reports of significant spamming, trolling, and disinfo on other sites with open registrations -- but be ready to limit down open registrations at least temporarily at the first sign of trouble.
