Since known bullying instances like mastodon.art, tenforward.social, hackers.town, artisan.chat, cloudisland.nz, rage.love, szmer.info, mstdn.social, stop.voring.me, eldritch.cafe, cultofshiv.wtf, weirder. earth, social.cosmick9.net, and their stupid lemmings continue to run lies and hate-speech against me, and now at Mastodon the possibility is given to blindly import any blocklists from these narcissistic sociopaths with their beloved #FediBlock bullshit, I don't see any valid point in contributing to Fediverse anymore and will concentrate on other things.

Therefore, I will shutdown fapsi.be without replacement at the end of February.

The buildup: US. annexes Baja California seizing it from Mexico. Starts funneling military grade weapons to Mexican drug cartels. Drug cartels form their own little zone and call it a republic. US. accuses Mexico of terrorizing said area. Declares that all Mexicans are fascists/nationalists and invades them. America declares that Latin Spanish is not a real language and that Mexians are not a real ethnicity, being simply European colonists. Trump is mysterious poisoned but survives. President Biden calls for return of “historically American” Ciudad Juarez and Baja California and claims Mexico is a product of the Confederacy.

Alice washed up on the shores of lemmy.ml with no memory. Little did Alice know about the adventure that awaited him.

His voyage of discovery took him to many sublemmies. Upon seeing another soul, he would eagerly run up to them and would ask the most basic questions imaginable. Generally anime adventurers make friends along the way, but not our hero. For what our hero lacked in intelligence and charisma, he made up for with low self control. His incessant questioning eventually got him the booted from a good many towns (sublemmies).

Tiring of constant wandering, he cried to the heavens: "In this cruel world, is my destiny controlled by some transcendental god? Well I reject you! I reject you all!"

He planted a flag on a remote island and declared it "askwomen". In order to attract women to his island, he made sure to emblazon the flag with a corset, to the chagrin of all.

Alice was smited yet again as the gods ban hammered him from lemmy.ml.

Through sheer power of will, Alice began to travel through the lemmyverse seeking power. Lemmy.ca - banned. Perthchat.org - trapped in the maze of 'registration questionnaire'. Lemmygrad - smited. Sopuli.xyz - hit by a train. Mander.xyz - arrow to the knee. Beehaw - bleach tranq dart.

The forsaken furry, u/wolfballer, seeing our protagonist's plight, welcomed Alice out of pity. Never has Alice found himself surrounded by trumpian furries. Never has Alice felt so at home. Wolfballer, impressed by the impulse posting, gave Alice more power than he ever dreamt off: Administrator.

With the energy of 1000 communists flowing through him, Alice rejoiced and redoubled his posting efforts.

But alas, it was all a cruel joke.

Wolfballer swept the rug. Kicked the ankle. Put a stick in the spokes. Wolfballer gave Alice a taste of power, a taste of friendship, only to take it away. With a cackle and a snort, Wolfballer revealed his trap card: that he was planning to close wolfballs all along.

"Any last words?" Smirked wolfballer as he held Alice by the neck over the 404 void. "Out of spite i'm going to get the covid vaccination" began Alice. Wolfballer frowned and released his grip on Alice furry collar. "I'm going to get the covid vaxx and shove it up your mangy..." screamed Alice as he fell, final words consumed by the void.

There was a 200+ incantations across 2 threads (1 and 2) in asklemmy.

Historians are torn on the exact date the catrina-stalagmite rapture began, but popular consensus considers this event to be the start. The ritual began with The Pope of Banishment catr-stag crying: "Comrades! I comment for the algorithm, may more of us see this insanity and come to our aid!"

This marked the first on record brigading on the Lemmyverse. Legions of catr-stag's loyal lemmygrad followers emerged from the shadows and surrounded Goose. They began chanting incantations.

Goose was never seen again and his body was never found.

His epitaph reads:

"Friend to all

You're a friend to everyone you meet. Friends and family come first to you, and you're always there to lend an ear or a shoulder to cry on. Your legacy is defined by the lives you've affected."

He was succeeded by a wife, 3 children and 2 ducks.

A public memorial service will follow.

Let me introduce a really cool fantasy novel:

"A Wizard of Earthsea" is about magic, its power and its sources.

The main character is Ged, who is told about, starting from his childhood until he rises to power.

It is narrated vividly. The description of the magical school and the diverse sources of magic is entertaining.

Today is an exciting day for the Lemmy project.

Almost one year after first enabling federation, we now federate with other projects for the first time! According to some people's definition, this finally makes us part of the Fediverse.

It took a lot of work to make this possible, so big thanks to NLnet for funding our full time work on Lemmy, and to @lanodan and @asonix for helping to figure out how Pleroma and Mastodon federation works (it's difficult because they have almost no documentation).

Major Changes

Federation code rewrite

The rewrite of the federation code started by @nutomic in August is now mostly complete. As a result, the code is much cleaner, and has tests to guarantee no breaking changes between Lemmy versions. As a side effect of this rewrite, it was now relatively easy to enable federation with other projects.

Mastodon and Pleroma users can:

• View Lemmy communities, user profiles, posts and comments
• Follow Lemmy communities to receive new posts and comments
• Replies (mentions) work in both directions, including notifications

In addition, Pleroma users can exchange private messages with Lemmy users.

Note that Pleroma and Mastodon rely on a compatibility mode in Lemmy, which means that they won't receive events like Deletes or Votes. Other projects whose federation works similar to Pleroma/Mastodon will likely also federate.

Hardcoded slur filter removed

Lemmy finally has essential moderation tools (reporting, user/community blocking), so the hardcoded filter isn't necessary anymore. If you want to keep using the slur filter, copy these lines to your config file when upgrading, and adjust to your liking.

Upgrade notes

Federation with Pleroma/Mastodon works automatically, you don't need to change anything, assuming that your allowlist/blocklist configuration permits it.

Note that Mastodon and Pleroma are much, much bigger than Lemmy at this point, with a combined 3 milion users and 4500 instances, compared to 20.000 users and 35 instances for Lemmy (source). The existing mod tools in Lemmy might not be adequate to handle that at the moment.

Be aware that if you have federation enabled in the Lemmy config, Mastodon and Pleroma users can now fetch all posts and comments, to view them and share with their followers. The Lemmy blocklist/allowlist can not prevent this, it only prevents posts/comments from blocked instances to be shown on your own instance. The only solution to this problem is disabling federation, or waiting for signed fetch to be implemented.

If you want to use federation, but review new instances before federating with them, use the allowlist. You can switch from open federation to allowlist federation by pasting the output of the command below into federation.allowed_instances in the Lemmy config.

We've now separated our ansible install method (the preferred way to deploy Lemmy) into its own repo, lemmy-ansible. Let us know if you need help migrating existing installations over to it.
