All things green, outdoors, and nature-y. Whether it's animals in their natural habitat, hiking trails and mountains, or planting a little garden for yourself (and everything in between), you can talk about it here.

See also our Environment community, which is focused on weather, climate, climate change, and stuff like that.

Caught these two in some hanky panky. Photo is blurry due to zooming in so I wouldn't disturb them. My hydrangea have overgrown this year and I've also noticed an unusual number of lizards around my yard. Seems the two are related.

Defining and measuring these things can be tricky, so there can be debate about the various titleholders. Still, this is a good overview of some of the more famous examples.

We live around the corner from the farm/home store. They sell 8ft sections of this livestock fencing, they had a pile of damaged pieces for half off!

I just carried it home, I passed a guy who was working on his yard and I said, "just out walking the fence!"

Something has been eating the leaves, but the plant is doing really well! This came from a seed from a pepper from the store - it was labeled as either an "ancient" or a "twisty" pepper.

This is the biggest pepper on the biggest plant and is around 6 inches long! (all I had with me for scale was my hand, but later remembered that none of you know how big my hand is 😋) It's in one of the half-barrel sized planters with another of the same kind, and 2 tabasco pepper plants.

Young deer, tried stopping by my lilies for a snack! I took this picture through the window but accidentally left the flash on from the last pic taken... This is the moment the deer noticed me - it didn't bolt until I started opening the door! (and it didn't seem to get any of the lilies... this time)

I've got several small houseplants in my home office, and I really like having them around. I'm still pretty new to taking care of them altogether, though, and we've gotten dozens of tiny house gnats now. I've put up sticky traps and tried to use some pest control in the potted soil. But would a small venus fly trap be able to help here?

How are you all managing the varmints in your yard? I've lived in a lot of places in my life and it seems I've found quite the mole and vole hotbed also known as my yard. sighs

My dog is able to catch them, but not without digging up tunnels, grass, and making a mess. My neighbor inserts "worms" (poison) into the tunnels, but I don't do that because of our dog.

I wish I could lay a yellow brick road for them to follow to a happier place, but they don't seem to be the type to understand. I don't actually want to harm any critters and thus the inner turmoil of humankind vs nature. I really don't like this post and I'm the one who wrote it.

Got a lovely surprise yesterday morning coming in to my office! I have a little prayer plant on my desk and it seems to be sprouting some cute little flowers now! Never expected it to flower. Totally made my day!

I noticed a bit of yellowing earlier this year around the base, and figured I'd keep an eye on it. Checking on it today, it seems worthwhile checking if anyone here has any advice. The camera really amplifies the difference here, I had barely noticed it just by looking.

The article itself is also pretty interesting: https://hakaimagazine.com/features/huh-our-fake-beach-is-good-for-sharks/

In the Canary Islands, endangered angelsharks and European tourists are attracted to the same habitat which, for once, isn’t bad for the wildlife.

But most of the people sunbathing on Teresitas are likely unaware of what lurks in the shallow waters lapping the shoreline. The bay—engineered and less than 10 kilometers from the Canaries’ second-largest city—is a surprising haven for pups of one of the world’s most critically endangered fish: the angelshark.

I just wanted to share. I'm working on a larger one for a birdbath, so this was practice. But it leaks, and the new one I'm working one has developed a big crack that leaks too. Serious question, will bees wax be a good choice to seal it?

[OC] A little jumping spider.

I remember when I was trying to take this photo the spider jumped on the lens and I might have screamed.

This spring I decided to start some trees from their seeds. The idea is to be able to plant them in a garden area in a few years. I started a lot of different plants but the mandarines and pomegranates grew very well.

Since I am spending a lot of time away from home, I also build a system to monitor, report and water the plants as needed. A little raspberry pi gets the report and also has a webcam where, occasionally, I take a pic to check on it (through a VPN connection).

I was super surprised to see the growth of the pomegranates, within a few days it grew by a few centimeters.

I just went for my run. And wanted to talk about it with some of my new social connections here on the threadiverse. I used to run a lot. Like a lot a lot. 100 miles a week sometimes. I was a long distance specialist trying to qualify for Olympic marathon trials. Injuries and old age have ended that chapter of my life and I often find myself needing to remind myself to be proud of my ~10mi/w workload because that's more than a lot of people my age in my profession do.

Today I just ran around my neighborhood. There's a nice park nearby but I don't get to go to it very often because the street I have to run down to get there can be pretty scary. I think access to green spaces is something that often goes neglected in community planning in my country

This happens to my cucumbers every year. Beautiful vines, and they start producing and then die super fast. I don't see any bugs on them, maybe downy mildew?

cross-posting for more reach as !houseplants@mander.xyz is a very small community (which you should absolutely subscribe to if you enjoy houseplants!): https://beehaw.org/post/1081427

I'm a newbie when it comes to indoor plants and I'm seeking some good books I can read to help me pick out new plants and learn new care techniques from. There are so many books on this topic, so I'd love to hear what y'all suggest before I make any decisions.

Websites are cool, but I need fewer excuses to look at screens, not more. :)

Posting from my alt account because file uploads seem to still not be working on beehaw

For the screen readers: This is a very small preying mantis that was on my door this morning. It is about the length of my first finger's first bone (the finger tip).
