Hi! I made a post a while ago about the show "From." It's a horror thriller about people stuck in a town where monsters that look like people come out at night. It starts quick, slows down in the middle, and picks way back up at the end of the first season. I kept rapidly alternating between loving and hating characters. It's also nail-bitingly tense at times!! I'm absolutely hooked and wanted to share it with others!

I think it's on Amazon Prime, though I just pirated it because I am poor.

I'd love to know if anyone else has watched it and what they thought! If you talk about season two, please spoiler-tag your posts cuz I haven't seen that yet.

Glorious (2022) [ Lovecraftian Horror / Comedy ]

A man in a toilet stall at a highway rest stop has a shitty day.

This was a real oddball I picked up after seeing it on Shudder. It's just a most ridiculous story in almost all aspects, but it will keep you engrossed.

The comedy was much better than I expected. The horror is more of a Lovecraftian horror and wasn't real scary. It does have a large amount of gore so bring a mop.

It was a groundbreaking smash, but things got so toxic behind the scenes that even co-showrunner Damon Lindelof now says: “I failed.” A powerful excerpt from the new book ‘Burn It Down.’

Looking for some romances that aren't so childish. I'm okay with a high-school setting if the characters don't feel like infantile, for example Sakurasou vs Your Lie In April.

To start, some I enjoyed are:

Spice and Wolf

Science Fell in Love, So I Tried to Prove It

Wotakoi: Love is Hard for Otaku

Golden Time

This is one that I had heard a lot about during my theatre school days, but I never got around to watching.

Just a few thoughts as I reflect on the movie:

-What happened to dialogue where every single character was a philosopher? I know it’s not realistic, but how refreshing that even these bandits under a broken temple gate are all reflecting on the nature of man

-The score! And the notable ABSENCE of the score during the fourth retelling of the story made the fight actually hysterical

-We need more dead men to testify via mediums in court

-I haven’t seen any other Kurosawa films but this guy clearly knows how to frame a face. The faces of these people are the whole film and they make it extraordinary

-I think Tajomura took the laugh from the woman. Assuming the fourth retelling is the most accurate (which the narrative admits it also lies), the great bandit didn’t laugh like he did in the court scene.

-The baby at the end: a perpetual symbol of humanity’s second chance at living an honest, selfless life? Not quite sure what to do with the ending, which is something I love in all narratives.

I’ve been watching a lot of Disney/Pixar/Dreamworks movies because of my kid, so I was grateful to watch a film of real magnitude with RASHOMON. What are y’all’s thoughts on the film? How has it made an impact on you?

I thought I remembered a lukewarm reception for the first season, but rotten tomatoes has each season at 100% (and yeah, I know how to treat rotten tomato scores).

Comparisons to Avatar welcome.

Ahead of the merger with Showtime Paramount+ has cancelled more shows. The most surprising of which is Star Trek:Prodigy

The animated coproduction with Nickelodeon was very well received and had been renewed for a second season. The second season is in post production and will be sold to another streamer/broadcaster.

My view is that cancelling already renewed content is a sure fire way to lose subscribers.

Binged the first five episodes last weekend and the sixth just now (Prime). It's a crime drama interwoven with comedy.

It's definetly vulgar, often tiresomely so, with one of the characters. Tonight though, I saw a very human side of her that was really tender and lovely... despite the vulgarity. 😏

On the other hand, Kate Box plays a detective that simply continues to draw me in further with each episode. I want to watch her work. I can feel the reasons why she is who she is. I can see what drives her. I see her brokenness and also what makes her great. I want to know her. I admire her. Tonight, I could truly empathize with her in ways that I haven't been able to with others folks for a long time. I love good story telling like this. 💜

Anyway, it's been worth the watch and I look forward to finishing it out.

What do you all think?

One of the primary reasons I love Star Trek so much is because of the continued hope it fills me with as I imagine a better future for humanity.

I'm grateful for all those who resist and stand up for justice and equality. For the lives lost. For those fighting each day. While my heart feels so often crushed, I can't help but look forward with hope and longing.

Never forget that humanity has done better. We've done great harm, but have also grown in light of that. We will continue to see change so long as we keep fighting for change.

Such a good episode to watch this evening. I'm a bundle of emotions. 💜

If you ever wondered why very few animated movies look as good as Across the Spider-Verse...

From the article:

According to people who worked on the sequel, Across the Spider-Verse, it’s because the working conditions required to produce such artistry are not sustainable. Multiple Across the Spider-Verse crew members — ranging from artists to production executives who have worked anywhere from five to a dozen years in the animation business — describe the process of making the the $150 million Sony project as uniquely arduous, involving a relentless kind of revisionism that compelled approximately 100 artists to flee the movie before its completion. Four of these crew members agreed to speak pseudonymously about the sprint to finish the movie three years into the sequel’s development and production, a period whose franticness they attribute to Lord’s management style — in particular, his seeming inability to conceptualize 3-D animation during the early planning stages and his preference to edit fully rendered work instead.

Personally, I don't really want to interact with the sweat of a giant Chris Hemsworth on a ground-level billboard, but perhaps I am just out of touch with the culture.

A ridiculous premise, outlandish over-the-top characters, blood & gore for the blood & gores sake of it, a lederhosen (?) clad heroin, and Casper Van Dien. I don’t know if I can think of a better set-up.

It was generally a fun & silly movie that captured the grindhouse film spirit. A quick caveat before I list a few criticisms, the movie could have been made this was purposefully and I just didn’t “like, get it, man.” So much like the grindhouse films they were trying to emulate, there were some sequences that dragged on a bit and some that were a bit oddly cut together. Which again, I can definitely see as being done on purpose. My last qualm would be I would’ve loved to see more action! I wanted to see that montage put to more use.

That said, the cheesy (wink) dialogue, action, and gore you do get is fantastic and everything a grindhouse film should be. Considering that it was crowd/self-funded movie I would give it a rating of 88% (reference from the movie). But really I’d give it a “recommend” if you enjoyed Planet Terror, Machete, or Kill Bill.

Did you see Mad Heidi (2022), what did you think?
