This will be the make or break moment. What we do in the hours after something like this is declared will determine whether we descend into authoritarianism or light the fire of resistance.

I will not sugar coat it for you, it is very possible that protesting will prompt a strong reaction on their part. We cannot be afraid of this. If they choose to retaliate against protestors it will only be to our advantage, because we will use that to rally others. We need to start preparing ourselves and our neighbors for this now, so that we are ready to act when the time comes.

Remember also that Trump, like all bullies, becomes meek when people actually stand up to him. We will persevere if we stand strong together.

Good news: I got over my fear of making phone calls to reach out to Senator Chuck Schumer and Kristin Gillibrand.

Bad news: Only got their v/mails.

I still left a message on both their machines saying who I was, that I’ve been a New Yorker my whole life, and that I’ve voted Democrat since I was 18 and voted for the both of them. I told them that I wanted them to vote NO on the Clother and the Budget Passing. I told them I wanted the Government to shut down because the Democrats have no real leverage at the moment to get things done and the Republicans need to make a real bi-partisan deal once the government was shut down. I told them if they didn’t vote NO then I wouldn’t vote for them.

I don’t know if I’ll make a difference or not. I assume that there are people who will agree with what I said and others who oppose. I didn’t write this post to engage in debate. I just don’t want to have any regrets on Friday night that I didn’t do enough. I did what I could. I’ll keep fighting and protesting where I can and when I can until real improvements are made in everyday American lives.

I edited my post over an hour ago when I first noticed that reddit was no longer hiding certain subreddits in /r/all. But I was NOT ALONE in noticing this, numerous comments below reflect exactly what we were all seeing. But all does appear normal now.

Additionally, search results on Google about 50501 changed SHARPLY overnight. Not just 50501 either...articles covering protests happening each day are no longer the top results... the media is trying to help their billionaire buddies hide the momentum we are building in an effort to suppress our movement.

Yesterday was a big day for this subreddit as we saw huge numbers of people calling their Senators to express their wishes for a NO vote on the continuing resolution. The day ended with Chuck Schumer saying that Democrats will indeed vote NO on the CR. I cannot be more clear in stating that this happened BECAUSE OF OUR COLLECTIVE EFFORT. And now the media is worried that they made it too easy for us to all coordinate and act like they saw yesterday. So they are HIDING our discussions about what we want.

What he neglected to say is that he and other Democrats will move forward with kicking the can down the road further with a clean CR.

Here's the deal. Republicans control every single branch of Government and can pass a REAL budget without a single Democrat voting yes. Why are Democrats letting them get a free pass by voting to for a "clean" CR. There is no such thing as a "clean" CR. All of them kick the can down the road.

Anyone looking at the current budget authoring process knows that Republicans have had SIX MONTHS to work on a REAL budget. SIX MONTHS they sat on their hands. MAKE THEM SUFFER THE CONSEQUENCES OF THOSE ACTIONS.

I am calling my Senators first thing today and telling them to vote NO ON ANY continuing resolution. Period. SHUT IT DOWN. If Republicans cannot Govern and get a budget that only needs 51 of the 53 votes they have in the Senate that's their own damn fault. Not Democrats.

The Republicans' plans to gut social security is literally THE action that is most likely to turn moderates and Republicans against Trump and Musk. Millions of older Americans rely on social security as their main source of income.

I worry that 50501 is too geared around Discord and Reddit and run by young people and thus might not be as tuned into how important this issue is for anyone 40 and older (people saving for retirement or retired).

I recommend that the organization has a protest plan ready to go. If the Republicans announce a plan to gut social security, nationwide protests must happen IMMEDIATELY, no waiting. And you must have a team in place that is ready to reach out to older folks where they are: on Facebook. People WILL be in the streets about this, because they rely on that money to live.

This is very important when you call your senators. You are telling them to filibuster the CR. We want a government shutdown.

Voting no on the CR is easy. But don't allow yourselves to be fooled. Voting for cloture and then voting no on the CR is capitulation. It is procedural theatrics. Be specific when you call that you want them to filibuster the CR and that you are supporting them in that effort and that you know it will lead to a shutdown.

The shutdown will not make it easier for the Whitehouse to fire people. Any statements along those lines imply that the Whitehouse respects the law around firing, which they clearly do not. Voting for cloture is just more pretending that this all still normal.

This is also important because it shows that we understand how our government works. A demonstrably informed populace is much more powerful. Knowing what we want and why we want it matters.
