I’m looking at getting a mesh WiFi system for my parent’s house because the connection in the basement is completely non existent. What I’m wondering is- do I need to run an Ethernet to the mesh set in the basement in order for it to work?

Would I be better off using two routers one downstairs/ one upstairs?

I occasionally work remote, and game in the evenings! So the connection is important!

You don't need to run a wire if the satellite unit has good signal strength to the router unit, but wiring it will give you the best performance at the second unit in both speeds and reliability. You definitely don't want two routers, unless one is in AP mode. But mesh will give you better Wifi experience moving around your home between units.
