I have an old Samsung Galaxy (2016) with Android 7.1 and all the recent Youtube ReVanced apps require Android 8+. The latest version you can use on Android 6+ is 17.36.37

My problem is videos stop loading after like a minute of playing, it gets stuck infinitely. I tried installing Vanced, which doesnt load videos at all anymore. Older versions of ReVanced, doesnt work. Other apps like NewPipe, but i dont like that they dont allow you to log-in to Google account. Also i heard that Youtube flags certain accounts like that, so you have to make a new one, but i dont want to abandon my 10 year old acc and build up my recommended page from scratch.

Is there anyone with old Androids? What is the solution here?

Playback stopping after a minute isn't an Android version problem.

This setting in revanced extended fixes it.

Don't know if it is available in revanced. Check settings - revanced - miscellaneous , scroll to the bottom.

If not try switching to rvextended

tried that, tried different versions of spoof player, including the "16.08 that solves the issue for most people", but no results

Isn't that "Spoof app version"? What we want is spoof player parameters.

Maybe check:

edit: I've just seen that you don't like the fact that you can't sign in to your google account... If you want to synchronise your subscriptions with your computer, you can create an account on a Piped server and then your subscriptions will be synchronised with LibreTube. Otherwise, I don't know.

i mostly use youtube for recommended page and i believe these apps with their separate accounts dont support that

Look into grayjay. Luis Rossman just released that app as a YouTube client replacement

[–] lemann@lemmy.one 3 points 1 year ago

Grayjay requires minimum android 10, after some community feedback I believe they're bringing it down to android 9

This is how I use youtube with NewPipe while still taking the advantage of recommended page (algorithm).

A bit of a complicated setup, but it's not that awful.

I use browser to open up the youtube front page (thus taking the advantage of the recommended page) Tap and hold on the video you want to watch and in the context menu, choose Share link and then choose to share it with Open link with, which will let you choose where you want to open up the video in, then choose NewPipe.

In chrome based browsers a shortcut will appear for the most used share link option you use, which will reduce one tap.

Related videos somewhat still show up when you're in a video. It's true that the homepage is just default YouTube though

Only solution is probably to get a newer android version. Check if a custom rom like LineageOS is available for your device.

[–] lemann@lemmy.one 3 points 1 year ago

I think this is pretty much the best solution available to OP here, aside from them getting a new device

that would be too much work for me, i would rather buy myself some cheap Redmi instead. i mean there has to be a huge chunk of people that use older phones because they dont care about playing games or (what else would you use new stronger phones for?). i think im gonna try to install default Youtube app, since we get no ads in russia anyways. but im gonna miss out on other Premium features

Sure, throw away a working phone because you won't spend half an hour on upgrading it

Not everyone is a jobless neet with free time to tinker and destroy perfectly working devices.

Sure, create more electronic trash, why don'cha?

Find your exact device here and then look at tutorials for unlocking your bootloader and installing a custom ROM. I had a Galaxy from that era and it's relatively easy to pwn them. As a noob, you should set aside a day for the process and make sure you've carefully read all the tutorials before that day. Careful prep will save you a lot of stress.

custom OS sounds like overkill for a single problem i have, i like my 7.1 and lots of apps work without problems besides youtube. relearning everything is too much work for my dumb ass

[–] TokyoMonsterTrucker@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Well, you probably just need to buy that shitty Redmi then. My shitty Redmi thinks it's a new Pixel, however, thanks to my dumb ass learning a few new tricks on my old S7 back in the day 😉

By the way, I get free backups in Google Photos with PixelExperience, because it's free for my "Google Pixel 5".

Same! Not sure why Google doesn't crack down on it. They either don't know, don't care, or quietly want to encourage people to become Android devs

[–] user224@lemmy.sdf.org 1 points 1 year ago

Well, I do have to agree Android 7 is the last great Android version.

Have you considered upgrading to Android 10 with LOS?

[–] Johanno@feddit.de 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

For revanced I can say it must be a change on Youtubes site. Because I had the same issue with a relatively new Version of Youtube and revanced on Android 12.

There is the new app grayjay.app which might be a solution for you. YouTube flagging your account is a risk you probably already take with revanced

[–] Mimia@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I just made a new acc and the problem is still there, i guess they flag you down instantly as soon as you open ReVanced. Problem with different apps is that most of them dont allow you to log-in to Google acc, so you dont have your subscriptions, playlists, recommends page. I dont want to browse youtube anonymously, i dont care about my data being stolen by north korean CIA

[–] Johanno@feddit.de 1 points 1 year ago

I never had this issue with revanced. Maybe because I am from Europe

You run Android 6?
