I only do it, when watching something in english (i'm german). So I can look it up if I don't understand something correctly.
Always have used subtitles! I have auditory processing issues and have always had issues watching movies. Heck, it takes me around 3 times watching a movie without subtitles to fully understand the dialouge! More if there are accents.
English not being my first language subtitles are quite useful for me. also I watch a lot of foreign stuff in its original language nowadays, this wouldn't be possible without subtitles at all.
I got Menieres disease and went deaf in one ear, That's why I use them, The Mrs got so used to them she likes to have them on too now.
My wife isn’t a native English speaker, so we usually watch with subtitles in her native language when they’re available. (Kudos to Netflix, Apple, and Amazon for the wide selection of subtitle languages on their original shows.)
This works great: I am not literate enough in her language to find the subtitles distracting, and she can follow along with less effort than when the subtitles are in English. Unfortunately it breaks down as soon as the characters start speaking another language. Then I have to pause, rewind a bit, and set the subtitle language to English for the duration of the scene.
I suggest that your wife changes to titles in English. It will improve her comprehension as she can match the dialog to the text. I know it's distracting but it will improve her ability to follow English conversations in different accents.
There was a time when I only watched American TV & movies, and because of Netflix, now it's hard to understand the India accent, or the Scottish, or the Irish... I'm also fluent in Mexican Spanish and don't understand the Argentinian, Colombian, Spaniard accents.
If you’re watching Netflix, you can’t even rely on the damn subtitles. I watched Extraction 2 the other day. Some scenes, where people weren’t speaking English, used subtitles. Sometimes, two lines of dialogue would be displayed on the screen for less than a second. Other times, no subtitles appeared at all. If I rewind the scene, I may get the subtitles to appear, but who wants to try that all the time?
And in case you’re wondering, I’ve had this problem with other movies and shows, too. It’s an issue whether the subtitles are automatically used sporadically, or whether I’ve manually turned on subtitles for the entire show.
Because of this problem, I try to use the subtitles on Netflix as little as possible.
My username says it all. I can’t watch anything without subtitles or I’m forced to turn my soundbar up as far as it can go. No go for the little one sleeping at night. Or AirPods connected to my AppleTV
For me, it's a combination of adhd, being a little hard of hearing, and the terrible audio mixing/mastering of modern films
