VLC was invented to screen share video from a host computer to a group call? TIL
No, it was invented to stream video files, I don't think it's able screen share, but you can use it easily for watch parties. Thats how I understood OPs question.

That's an interesting idea and since vlc is even able to play files that are still downloading I guess it could also stream a screen grab file that is just temporary?
You understood right, I need it for watch party. Can I use it for streaming over the internet or only my local wifi?

Then anything that works on your lan can be accessed from the internet.
Vlc should be able to screen share as well.
How do I do it? Could you share some tips/guide?
Oh I haven't used that function in years but there's a lot of helpful guides on it out there like this one. It's a little "complicated" for modern days but it works pretty reliable.
Funny enough streaming videos is vlcs "Main" function - VideoLanClient

I don't see how this would work with additional network setup if you want to stream to devices outside your LAN. You'd need to at least set up port forwarding on your router to allow your friends to access your stream, and then you'd still be limited by the upload rate of your local network, which might not be fast enough depending on the movie quality. A centralized version of this, where the movie resides on some server that you all "download" the movie from would be more reliable, but I don't know of any from the top of my head that would do the trick.
EDIT: now that i think of it, w2g.tv allows streaming any movie file from any server via direct link to file. So if you figure out any sort of hoster where you can upload the movie, or if you find a streaming platform that hosts a direct .mp4 file already, you can copy & paste that into a w2g lobby, invite your friends, and start watching.
Surprised people didn't mention Hyperbeam (former Tutturu) https://watch.hyperbeam.com/ You can't upload your own stuff but you can just go to a streaming site and open any show you want

Might be a bit heavy, but assuming you have a good upload/GPU: Jellyfin.
It even has a group watch button. Never tried it though
When I try to have movie nights with friends I’ll jus take the file, open it with chrome; and share my chrome screen on discord. For some reason that works for me.
I haven't tried it on Linux, but a while back I was streaming stuff for my friends on Kosmi. It worked pretty well.
Could I stream my personal home files? Or does it have to be something on the www?

You can either share your screen/window or upload a file. There's probably a filesize limit, but I'm not sure what it is. I was using it to upload episodes of GameCenter CX to stream and I didn't have any issues, but those episodes aren't super huge. YMMV if you're trying to upload a bluray rip or something.
I was able to get video streaming with audio working on Discord using pipewire, but it was a massive pain in the ass and somewhat unreliable. I don't have a lot of experience with Jitsi, but I trust others' recommendation there
yeah that's one of the reasons I'm looking for alternatives. It's almost always too difficult to set up for discord, or straight poor quality or unreliable.
No one has mentioned OBS? If I understood OP's need correctly that seems like the obvious choice to me.
In theory yes. But with obs you need a streaming server, and what server are you gonna use for pirated content?

Not op. But...
On Linux I set up OBS to capture my game window and from obs you are able to set the captured screen as a webcam stream.
On Linux I had to install some stuff to get a restream of the audio. It looped the game audio into a virtual mic.
So...
I Jitsi I just set my mic and video to the appropriate obs-made virtual cam and mic.
My upload maxes at 10mb/s
So I didn't have the best luck with Jitsi. Definitely not full screen quality.
But OBS might come in handy if you find another way to stream.
OBS I believe is available for windows, Linux, and Mac.
I'm looking for the same solution but to stream a game screen.
I got obs to work with Jitsi but it's low quality.

Ahh I can't really recall. Sry
