Souvenirs to buy in Malaysia

We Malaysians might not be aware but apparently, we’re famous for our chocolate. Every day, an endless stream of buses filled with China tourists make their stop at chocolate factories that locals don’t even know exist haha.

Other must-buy Malaysian products according to this China YouTuber: Milo powder, instant white coffee, instant teh tarik and instant cooking bak kut teh.

I was in Labuan back in May, and brought some durian chocolate home to Northern Europe. I was the only one who liked it. Most who tried it found the faint fart smell upon opening the pack off-putting for some reason.

@rakyat @cafe Ah, this old tourist scam. Walked into one of these 'chocolate factories' 20 years ago. USD20 for 6 tiny half seashells. The Belgian equivalent was 1/4 the price.

@jkn Haha yeah and you’ll never see any locals there!

@rakyat @cafe OldTown White Coffee just opened in Manila! Haven't been yet though since it's a bit far from my area.

@agasramirez
Yeah I heard! I’ve been to their original shop in Ipoh old town, which is still around. The chain itself… well, it’s a restaurant chain but I hope they are able to keep it up to standards :)

wut? that's very weird lol. i know we buy chocolate containing alcohol in dutyfree place(like langkawi), but didn't know they also come here to buy chocolate.

[–] rakyat@hachyderm.io 3 points 1 year ago

@Annoyed_Crabby Haha I know about this because I once stumbled on one of the chocolate factories hidden in some housing area near Bukit Bintang, with lots and lots of tourist buses parked outside…

Dahfa, a fish snack. Or Wanfa, the copycat?

My reluctant British friends tried it and found the snack interesting, when they were not so keen on trying unfamiliar food. I think I like Dahfa the most myself, although I haven't bought it for a long time. Expensive now, RM16 a pack when it used to be RM6 in the past.

I think our soy sauce or kicap is the best. Gula Melaka, Gula Apong syrup. Malaysian instant noodles.

@anotherlemmyuser Yeah Gula Melaka and Gula Apong gives us wonderful drinks and desserts like cendol and three layer tea! The more adventurous can probably get some belacan or other shrimp-based products.

@rakyat @cafe Indonesians love Malaysian version of Milo.

I haven't tried it though 🤔

[–] rakyat@hachyderm.io 2 points 1 year ago

@gombang And Malaysians will tell you that Milo tastes best when it’s served from a Milo truck/van. The Milo we make ourselves at home never tastes as good haha

@rakyat @cafe durian-flavored chocolate! I've only seen it in Malaysia and Singapore

[–] rakyat@hachyderm.io 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

@michelin What? Not even in Indonesia? I do love that we have seasonal Durian McFlurrys in our McDs here.

@rakyat @cafe I ... can't remember seeing it in Indonesia. When I brought back durian chocolate as souvenirs when I still worked there my coworkers seem really excited
