Sync is fucking fantastic, just how I remember. I don't mind at all paying for a great app by a talented dev.

The pro version is supposed to be out later, and will just be a one-time payment unlike ultra's subscription

I say this as someone who is probably one of the biggest supporters of software-freedom around here, but bullying or shaming people for preferring non-free apps does nothing but incite resentment towards the movement. I value the four freedoms because I think I deserve control of my computing, not because I think it's my place to dictate what others should value.

[–] squaresinger@feddit.de 23 points 1 year ago (1 children)

The community is one of the worst aspects when working with/on opensource software.

There are so many people with Open Source rabies...

Combine that with all those people who don't understand the difference between software developed by people who donate their spare time to work on FOSS software and for-profit software developed by big corporations. As a FOSS dev you get so many entitled assholes who think downloading a free app gives them the right to threaten/abuse the devs.

And then there are the fanboys who attack everyone who talks about downsides of their favourite product.

All in all, the hostile community makes FOSS development very not fun.

I don't understand the bitching about it, we users were asking for this, it is the good thing about Lemmy/Fediverse, you have tons of options, and probably will have more, heck even the PWA are awesome, no need to download anything at all.

Remind me of that meme where the person is complaining about the thing, gets the thing and then has the frowny face.

[–] faintedheart@lemm.ee 50 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Sync is a perfectly fine app for me. I tried all other apps and nowhere near to sync. I don't even have ads on the free version as I am using dns ad blocker. The moment one time payment for removing ads is out(it is coming), I will buy it. Or I will donate to dev in some other way as I am not a fan of subscriptions.

[–] XTornado@lemmy.ml 7 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I do not have ads either....but no idea why I do not have an ad blocker, they just appear.empty for some reason.

[–] ladrodibestie@feddit.it 15 points 1 year ago (2 children)

i'm using memmy (iOs) ! works very good, and it feels nostalgic since they tried their best to... be inspired by apollo 😄

Have you heard of wefwef? It’s basically Apollo for Lemmy.

Link to a Reddit post about it, quickest I could find in short order at work:

https://www.reddit.com/r/apolloapp/comments/14lr2n4/wefwef_is_an_apollo_like_web_app_for_lemmy/

[–] Shambles 6 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Thanks, I didn’t realize that. My icon still says wefwef.

Seriously good by any measure, and fantastic for a webapp. Smoother and more native-feeling than a lot of actual native apps.

[–] A10@kerala.party 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Yes and big fan as well even hosted it on my instance

That's Voyager.

Great... Now I get to look forward to a trip back from the delta quadrant.

Hopefully the dev changes his mind about not creating an app for lemmy

[–] JimmyDean@lemm.ee 29 points 1 year ago

I just installed Sync after browsing with Jerboa for the past month. Sync has such a clean, smooth look that if it functions even remotely consistently it'll be my new replacement.

[–] Torty 25 points 1 year ago

So fucking ecstatic to have seen that Sync for Lemmy came out today personally.

Paid for Ultra immediately without a second thought even if the app is early days I know it's a worthwhile investment to keep ljdawson paid and caffeinated lol

[–] isVeryLoud@lemmy.ca 23 points 1 year ago

Y'all gotta stop shitting on non-FOSS Lemmy apps.

Lemmy is Lemmy, let people access the platform how they want to. It doesn't affect you. Don't use Sync if you don't want to.

[–] ljdawson@lemmy.ml 23 points 1 year ago (5 children)
[–] BigCountry@lemmy.ml 7 points 1 year ago

I used sync for reddit for years, I had no ads in the free version and the pro version. I've tried a half dozen apps for Lemmy since my Reddexit. Sync for Lemmy is far and away the best. I really missed its design. I was happy to toss $20 to you for no ads on Sync for Lemmy. Thanks for all the hard work.

Picked up Jerboa when I made the switch to Lemmy. Now I won't be returning to Sync. No way in hell I'm paying a subscription.

[–] Tigwyk@lemmy.vrchat-dev.tech 19 points 1 year ago (1 children)

As a Jerboa user who just started using Sync, I can honestly say it's really fucking slick. Like really slick.

[–] Fazoo@lemmy.ml 9 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I'm sure it is, but until the live version has single payment, I won't consider the switch. Even then, I don't use Lemmy half as much as I used Reddit, so I won't pay the same amount I paid for Reddit.

[–] Tigwyk@lemmy.vrchat-dev.tech 7 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I am looking forward to the lifetime payment, yeah. Is Sync made by a single dev? I don't know anything about this app aside from everyone clamoring for the team to make a Lemmy-compatible version.

I also find myself using Lemmy less than Reddit but I'm hoping as we discover and tailor our feeds with more fitting communities then it'll naturally become a healthy replacement. It took me like 10 years to curate my reddit algorithm.

[–] quitethekiwi@lemmy.nz 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Yes Sync is developed by a single Dev.

[–] Tigwyk@lemmy.vrchat-dev.tech 6 points 1 year ago

Well it's pretty damn cool for a single dev then, I'm impressed. I like the idea of giving money to a talented dev and not to reddit, too, so that feels nice.

Upvoted on infinity

[–] Sstadler06@lemm.ee 17 points 1 year ago

Lemmy is fun is what I want

[–] HurlingDurling@lemm.ee 17 points 1 year ago

Yeah, tried sync since that was my reddit app of choice but the ads and tracking just forced me to uninstall it. Trying thunder now and it seems pretty good

The API will come soon! (seriously its being worked on if you don't know lol)

Whether we'll be using Sync when time comes is another thing lol.

Thunder! I run the ipa sideloaded. Gets weekly or so updates, very active development.

I am liking most apps in some way. I keep switching between many. And also each of the apps are in active development. Currenly using: Summit, Thunder, Liftoff, Sync, Voyager.

I guess Voyager is also planning for a native app for both Android and iOS

Excited for all.

[–] shiveyarbles 6 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Yeah I like Sync, but I don't do ads or subscription. Hopefully there is a flat price.

Infinity won't let me log in. So far I'm really liking Sync. And I'm completely fine with a subscription at it's current price. I'm happy to support devs. 8 don't like working for free. Not sure why they should have to. And so it's either ads or subscriptions. Pick your poison.

[–] Metaright@kbin.social 6 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (3 children)

And so it’s either ads or subscriptions. Pick your poison.

Please think really hard for a moment and try to consider whether there are more ways to purchase something than by subscription or ad support.

I like Liftoff.

It's comfy and easy to use.

[–] CCatMan@lemmy.one 6 points 1 year ago

I like jerboa, but I love infinity.
