That number is almost certainly out of date already. :ablobwink:

@GadgeteerZA @rysiek
Basically 30% of current users joined in the last, what, 3 days?
@oblomov @GadgeteerZA current *active* users. "Current users" are in the range of ~5-6mln.
@rysiek @GadgeteerZA
Right, so it's not just join, there's also some “revitalization”
@oblomov quite a lot, in fact. Consider: https://the-federation.info/
Click the "Active users ratio" button. I find it pretty informative about what's actually going on. Which is: a lot of people had accounts since April or before, but now they got real active.
@Greenpepper
Cool to see an article in a large media outlet about Fedi. I wonder whether the federation aspect and instances are soo difficult to grasp as portrayed, though. Sure, it's another step before getting started which took me a day or so to decide but it's not difficult per se, is it? Maybe a good filter who signs up. I mean if one is not willing to put in the barest minimum of consideration, why switch from birdsite at all?
Couldn't agree more. I couldn't bare to see Mastodon turn into Twitter with all the toxic comments and negativity.
@Greenpepper @grob If/when Mastodon becomes more popular, at some stage it'll become a political battlefield just like all the mainstream (social) media. But I hope the federated nature of Mastodon can help mitigate that .
In all honesty I suspect that the majority of people that migrated from Twitter will leave within a couple of weeks. With that the problem solves itself. The same happened back in April when the news arrived that Musk wanted to buy Twitter.
@Greenpepper
"devoted left-leaning niche communities? Us? Oh deary my, I didn't know!"
*touches chest and looks flabbergasted but in an TikTok-y or aristocratic way, not entirely clear*
That got me scratching my head too.
Wait, what?
“The platform is home to a devoted base of left-leaning communities”
Bollocks, It's a home for everyone.
Then please list a platform which is not riddled with damn communists! They're everywhere! 🙃
In fact, I think the Lemmy software even powers some fascist or at least very right-leaning fanbases. I mean, just have a look at any instance's blocklist…
@Greenpepper Why did they have to put a political tag on Mastodon though? I don't like that. It's a place for everyone, not just the left-leaning people.
I agree, apparently a place for everyone is left-leaning nowadays.
It's now 199k+ news users since Oct 27 - https://mastodon.social/@Gargron/109277492892460574
Of active daily users yes, but supposedly total registered accounts rose from 4.x million to 5.x million.
