Brought the ol' iphone in for a dip:

Glass and waves = bliss.

Power's back. It's working now, but the electrician didn't need to do anything... Was too expensive to replace power socket so it's just sitting there all covered in soot. Hopefully will get a quote for the switchboard and haggle to landlord to deal with it. Honestly, too tired to give a shit.

Thanks everyone for reading me rant yesterday. I got some helpful responses and it really meant a lot to me as I was quite distressed then. This is a nice little community, I love it here :)

[–] RustyRaven@aussie.zone 5 points 9 months ago (1 children)

I am glad you have power back, even if the switchboard issue is not repaired. You should also ask the landlord about the last electrical safety check which was conducted, as they are legally required to have this done every two years and rectify any problems identified.

From the EnergySafe website:

Rental providers must ensure an electrical safety check of all electrical switchboards, wiring and fittings in the premises is conducted every two years by a licensed electrician.

If requested, they must also provide the renter with the date of the most recent safety check, in writing.

The safety check must be conducted in accordance with section 4 of AS/NZS 3019:2022 “Electrical installations—Periodic assessment”.

If an electrical safety check has not been conducted within the last two years at the time the renter occupies the premises, the rental provider must arrange an electrical safety check as soon as practicable.

If the safety check shows electrical repairs are needed to make the property safe, the rental provider should engage a registered electrical contractor (REC) or a licensed electrician employed by a REC to do the repair work.

An electrical safety check happened a few months ago. I remember they pointed out the switchboard, but it looks like nothing happened of it. I will 100% follow this up with the landlord.

Dear Mother nature, can I please have better weather next labour day because quite frankly this weekend's was a bit shit. Can you lay off the heat and aim for around 25°c next time? Ta.

No air-con + sleeping in the lounge gang here.

Really felt my holiday was just starting the other day and now I’m back and have sads. Well at least I can tick off some major sightseeing off my list. Was surprised, but the Vatican City for art was definitely one of my favourites. Paid an obnoxious amount for a tour, but it was worth it just to get in a little bit earlier. Tourists are rabid, even in Winter.

[–] Catfish@aussie.zone 9 points 9 months ago

Managed to get to sleep, then woke up screaming with horrific leg cramp. Don’t forget some salty things with all that water you should be guzzling!

Why are we here? Just to suffer?

[–] useless_modern_god@aussie.zone 4 points 9 months ago

On a good day, yes.

[–] CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone 9 points 9 months ago (3 children)

Even though I got a good sleep I'm not a shiny happy person today.

Dinner is rolls, cold meat, and cheese, with juice. Too hot too cook.

[–] calhoon2005@aussie.zone 8 points 9 months ago (2 children)

Yesterday's waves were non existent, just one every now and then, and small, water like glass. Today's waves easily 1.5-2m on the main beach, and powerful as. Caught some great ones.

Yet another cleaning update: I cleaned. tomorrow I shall clean more. My room is tiny so I'm playing vacuum Tetris. Moving stuff around, vacuuming under, moving more stuff, etc. Tomorrow I have to pull the entertainment unit out and get behind it

I do not understand people who cut jeans into shorts so short they are mostly loose flapping pockets. Just looks weird.

[–] RustyRaven@aussie.zone 6 points 9 months ago

They're just showing off that they actually have pockets, unlike the evil bait-and-switch jeans I bought which have a curved seam that mimics where a pocket should go but fails to actually be a pocket.

Warned the Mrs if she opens one more blind she’s going outside to play for a while. Glad she doesn’t feel the heat but the rest of us do.

[–] bull@aussie.zone 8 points 9 months ago (1 children)

I'm home from my cheap motel split system utopia. Apartment is gross but I've gotten here early enough in the day to hopefully cool it before the sun really starts hitting the windows.

Seriously considering tinfoiling my bedroom wall of windows.

Started Band of Brothers a couple of days ago and just to episode 9

I can't stop crying. Wasn't ready for this.

[–] TinyBreak@aussie.zone 7 points 9 months ago

Left the ac on in the bedroom last night, made heaps of difference. Got a decent nights sleep and feeling much more human.

[–] RustyRaven@aussie.zone 7 points 9 months ago (3 children)

I made a start on cleaning up the shed this morning. It is a disgraceful mess, I have no idea where half this stuff even came from! Does engine oil go off? I have a bottle full of oil and I have no idea what it is for or how long it has been there.

Did not sleep much last night. Not because of the heat, but too many whirling thoughts. I think my brain did at least manage to come up with some solutions to a couple of the problems/challenges rather than just circling pointlessly all night.

Four ish hours sleep thanks to two ice packs, life is pain and suffering. back to cleaning.

Did my third water walk in a row this morning. Definitely feeling it - using muscles I haven't used or used as much. I hope the weather allows a few more - just not this hot, thanks.
In other news, the heat seems to have fried drivers' brains - someone nearly turned into me and I did have my lights on so it wasn't a matter of the silver car being harder to see. And I nearly got clipped by a Pajero.
Boy am I looking forward to when I can just walk to the beach.

[–] imoldgreeeg@aussie.zone 7 points 9 months ago (6 children)

Why am I watching the Oscars? I don't really care, I have only seen two of the movies, I have already seen the dresses on the red carpet, I hate ads....but I can't look away from the shiny things....I think my brain is fried

So it was actually OK last night but TONIGHT is when my bedroom has become genuinely too uncomfortable to sleep in - maybe the bricks have heated up fully and are now holding that lovely thermal mass or whatever. Despite the frustration of unfolding my shithouse sofa bed so late at night, I am sleeping in the airconditioned lounge tonight. Goodnight you all.

[–] melbaboutown@aussie.zone 4 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago)

Same. We're also sleeping in the lounge tonight

Eye protection was a good call. I started wearing safety glasses a few days ago, today Miss Moo shook her head and a lens caught a few microdroplets of ear medicine that would have gone dangerously close to my eye. I washed my face and lips just to be sure. She's still not big on wet food. Won't eat it.

I'm still finding tiny pieces of glass sticking to my feet. The stick vac isn't that powerful and struggles to get into corners. When the broom is dry from its quick bristle wash I will sweep

So excited to work from home today in my non air-conditioned apartment!

I started up my PC to play BG3 again, and have just been distracted by everything else instead.

Finally sitting down now. In the time it has taken me to traverse Act 2, my partner has completed 3 playthrough 😭 sometimes I hate that I cannot concentrate on games or hobbies for as long as I used to. Ugh

[–] melbaboutown@aussie.zone 5 points 9 months ago (4 children)

You and me both. It's like... why is this so hard to stick at? It's a leisure activity!

I braved the heat to fill my car with bags to take to the op shop tomorrow. I fitted in way more than I thought I would, only 2 bags left for now - but I'm about to start filling up more! I'll need to buy more bags when I am out tomorrow, this decluttering jag is going through them at a great rate.

[–] melbaboutown@aussie.zone 6 points 9 months ago

It's way past time for the cat's eardrops and I don't wanna... She's still a bit flat and sooky so I'm calling in the morning to try and get onto the specialist for this week.

What's the best way to set up a temporary spare bed for a guest?

Would need to buy the mattress or whatever but I do have all the linen/pillows already.

[–] underwatermagpies@aussie.zone 5 points 9 months ago

Grab an inflatable air bed from kmart or similar if you don't want to give up the space permanently. They're pretty comfy for a couple of nights.

I have decided to donate my bike if I can find someone who wants it. It is currently mostly a collection of parts that need to be put together, as I intended to do some repairs and got as far as buying parts and tools and pulling it apart before losing enthusiasm. I have made enquiries with the local communiy centre that does regular bike repair and demonstration workshops, I'm hoping they will be interested in taking it to use as a demonstration project that can then be donated as a working bike to someone who needs it.

[–] dumblederp@aussie.zone 6 points 9 months ago

CERES or Bicycle Recycle might be interested. If you near Springvale I can give you a hand assembling it. I like working on bikes.

Has anyone bought a house using a buying agent? i like the idea, but a lot of them seem to be very expensive & aimed at high end property and very expensive, I'm looking for someone who is affordable and a flat fee not commission based. Any feedback or recommendations?

Just put out a second load of washing. It should dry quickly in this heat.

I put Robot Dreams on thinking it'll just be nice in the background but for a simple animated film with no dialogue or a particularly complex plot, I can't believe how moved I was by the end. The yearning feeling of loneliness and hope really got to me. It's got such a lovely old fashioned feel to it. I think some of you will like it
