I recently picked up an old Singer (411g) from the side of the road, which was missing its power cord and bobbin. I picked up replacements for both and now have a working machine!

Since I have 0 experience with sewing machines (I've hand stitched leather but that's the extent of my sewing knowledge) I'm wondering what is a good way to get started?

Do you know of any simple patterns, or projects to try first? How did you get started?

Congrats!

I think my first ever project was a square pincushion. That could be a good option, and useful. I'd also recommend simply trying all the different stitching settings on some scrap fabric, so you have an idea how the machine feels/runs and what the stitches look like. Getting used to the pedal and controlling the speed can take a bit of practice. One other exercise is ruling some straight/curved/zig zag lines on fabric with a marker, then sewing along the lines.

For other starter projects it depends what you're into. But for example there are lots of bag tutorials on YouTube, and some can be quite easy. For other options, if you look at the website of something like SewMag UK they have heaps of free patterns for ornaments and decorations, or placemats and oven mitts, all kinds of household stuff. Some are really ugly imo but would be good starter projects.

If you want to get into sewing clothes, there's a lot of trial and error getting the fit right, but best to look for easy/beginner patterns that you like the style of.

Hope some of this is helpful!!
