I feel like China's political position here is to basically sit by and see who wins, then back their government economically.

China isn't really in the business of foreign pressure.

While correct, what the Junta is asking for makes perfect sense. China will never pressure anyone to do anything, but they would totally be willing to have both sides to cease fire and have peace talks and act as mediators. So asking China to ask the brotherhood isn't a bad idea.

However, considering the battlefield advantage that the brotherhood currently has, I question if they'll agree.

Also, this is more than the old ethnic alliances. Arguably the Brotherhood and co are so strong right now because of the pro-democracy movement, and the latter are probably not interested in stopping at a few regional concessions.
